You've probably been to a therapist before, and it hasn't quite felt right. Or maybe you liked them, but felt disconnected from their approach. Felt that there was a way to work more deeply with your emotions, but your therapist wanted to talk about your thoughts, and give you homework. Felt really bogged down in the details, and the negative, of what's been going on in your life. Haven't really laughed.

Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT) with a Trauma-Informed Approach at Kindle Hill Foundation. As a trauma-informed therapist, I am focused on helping teens and adults to navigate their unique challenges, both individually and within the dynamics of couples and families, through the healing power of horses. Horses possess an intuitive connection to human emotions and an innate ability to mirror and respond to our innermost feelings. This forms the foundation of EAT—an innovative approach that harmonizes the healing power of horses with evidenced-based therapeutic practices.

Shame dies when stories are told in safe places. Your story matters. Experiencing trauma can make us feel alone, ashamed, & burdened with self-doubt. When you take the brave step toward therapy and healing, you no longer have to do that alone. I work to hold a safe space so that each person who comes to me is able to openly share their story while learning how to access the tools to heal all wounds that they carry. I use Internal Family Systems as an approach to work on the root of pain and to help clients heal. I am certified in DBT therapy to help individuals regulate their emotions and build skills to navigate relationships.

Seeking therapy takes immense strength and courage. It can feel vulnerable to trust another human with your struggles, fear, and pain. From the beginning, I will do my best to listen deeply and carefully, respecting that you have been doing the best you can with what you’ve been handed in life. I believe that our symptoms often provide information about how we have had to adapt to our circumstances. I therefore strive to honor how you have had to cope while working towards alleviating your distress and deepening your connection with yourself and others.

You who are highly sensitive and feel a lot, welcome! You'll explore more deeply with me than in traditional talk therapy. You’ve likely tried psychotherapy before but have noticed that the work has either gone nowhere or taken you only so far, or you felt misunderstood. With an uncanny and intuitive ability to really “get” people from many walks of life, I will invite you to go beneath your thoughts, connect with your body and emotions, and gently access the root of your emotional discomfort and hurts to facilitate noticeable shifts with each session.

The primary focus of my practice for 40 years has been helping people achieve recovery from substance use disorders. I use a collaborative, motivational approach, rather than confrontation, and work with people on setting and achieving realistic and healthy goals for their problems. I believe, (as did Bill Wilson, the founder of AA) that there are many paths to recovery; each person must work on a program that reflects their unique needs and assets. I encourage people to explore their resources, their obstacles and their values in setting goals and in working a positive program. Secondarily, I am trained in couples/marital therapy.

Many years ago I changed my life by pursuing a more fulfilling career. The concept that most inspired me was “Neuroplasticity”- That we can change the way our mind works and in so doing experience greater well-being. Negative beliefs about ourselves are generally linked to negative things that we experienced in the past, or positive things that we needed to experience but unfortunately never did. By utilizing interventions that target "what happened" or "what needed to happen but didn't" we can increase our self-worth. We can't undo "what happened" but we CAN undo the impact that hurtful experiences/relationships have had on us.

You feel anxious, stuck, and overwhelmed. Perhaps you’ve been told you’re “too sensitive,” or maybe that you worry or expect too much. It’s hard to feel heard and understood by those around you. You struggle to feel good enough, to have trust that things will work out. You want nothing more than to feel calm and secure in your life, but you don’t know where to begin. If any of this sounds familiar, you've come to the right place.

My goal is to help clients grow and develop tools to move through the challenges they encounter. I work to create a safe place for clients to learn alternative ways to manage the stressors and conflicts in life that lead to anxiety, depression, PTSD, helplessness and hopelessness. I have been greatly honored to journey with individuals, couples and families as they navigate the challenges they face, make sense of their lives and feel better. I am continually amazed by the human spirit and each person’s ability to overcome adversity, even horrendous trauma.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
