Are you low-key (or high-key) stressed out by almost everything lately? Are your relationships more tense than free-flowing? Maybe you're looking forward to your drinks after work, more intensely than ever before. The stresses of daily life are piling up. Being at home with the people you love most, brings more pain and heartache. The silence is deafening. Drinks or watching TV alone are the only way to maintain the peace. During our time together you can expect a supportive environment where we can collaborate together to achieve your goals for the future and your relationships. www.OffTheCouchFamilyTherapyLLC.com

My life philosophy revolves around bringing loving kindness and acceptance into all parts of my life—including inside the therapeutic space. I believe we are all doing the best with the tools and experiences we were given, and that therapy can bring new meaning to those experiences. As a counselor, it is not my job to tell others how they should be—instead, I am here to accept my clients as they are while holding space for the areas in their lives that they want to change.

Trapped inside a life of depression and anxiety that doesn’t seem to have any escape? You find that your energy and motivation for life has diminished. You feel isolated and alone even though you have family and friends close to you. The voice you thought you had seems as though no one really hears it. You feel as though you are being ignored. Wanting to emerge from this life of torment as an empowered hopeful person is now your priority. The question is, where do you start in order to achieve this feat?

Everyone around you seems to have their life together. Meanwhile, you can’t escape the sleepless nights, mood swings, and faking a smile when people ask that dreaded question, “How are you?” Lately, you’re avoiding meetings and even skipping work or school because you’re so nervous. You find yourself snapping at people and then feeling horrible about it the rest of the day. The fact is you are miserable! You're overwhelmed by all there is to do, but people are depending on you. Pushing through isn't working anymore. It's like your world is spinning out of control and you’re afraid of losing your mind! Something needs to change.

Relationships are what make life richer, kinder, and more fun. When those aren't working well, life can be really tough, either because we don't have the relationships we want, or those we have aren't working... Loneliness, people-pleasing, social anxiety, or fear of rejection... arguments, lack of connection, or constant conflict... all these can make relationships really, really hard. It all comes down to our relationship with... ourselves. When we know, love, and care for ourselves, our relationships start to change, from the inside out.

Nothing seems to be working. You feel stuck and hopeless. You survived a not-so-great childhood (maybe a bad one)…but even now that you're on your own, things don't seem to be falling into place. You don't feel good about yourself no matter what you do (you might be successful and hard-working), and you either avoid or seem to choose the wrong relationships (or they're so stressful). Things may be falling apart... or maybe they have always felt broken. And.... you have headaches, back problems, or a condition that doesn't respond to treatment. All of it makes it hard to wake up without feeling overwhelmed and hopeless... exhausted.

I have have a lot of experience with anxiety, depression and OCD, as well as helping people with big life changes, self esteem, and relationship issues. Everybody is different, so in working together I will listen to you and what you need from me to help you the best. A big reason I decided to become a therapist due to the belief that if people are more connected and insightful about themselves—and how they impact the world—the world itself will become a better place.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
