Life has been quite challenging. You are curious about whether things can be different or less challenging. Maybe a friend/family or doctor has recommended that you meet with someone. Whatever it is that brought you to read this: disappointment, dissatisfaction, worry, anxiety, behaviors that you wish you didn't have to deal with, fatigue, conflict in relationships, difficulty at work or existential issues, it has a story to share and it can be helpful to tell it.

Relationships can be hard. You can love someone and still have destructive patterns of communication. I want to help each person learn new and better ways to communicate. Sometimes, we just need to be heard by someone. I want to hear from each client by listening deeply to what they are saying. I have worked with many couples and individuals over the years to build stronger relationships and happier lives.

What if you could learn to view difficult emotions as an opportunity for growth instead of a weakness? It’s true that suffering is universal, but with the right perspective you can learn to see that as a gift; a source of energy you can use to propel you towards your life’s goals and eventual contentment. Many seek to find happiness by changing their circumstances, but I hope to show you that accepting your current circumstances is the key to permanent change. My calling is to help you find peace and contentment, specializing in depression and anxiety, addiction, grief, existential concerns and parenting skills.

My specialty areas include trauma and PTSD, women’s issues including perinatal counseling, chronic pain/adapting to physical health issues, depression, anxiety, grief, relationship concerns, ADHD, existential concerns, and identity.
My goal as your therapist is to support and empower you toward your goals and promote healing. I believe in listening to your story, helping you uncover your priorities, and offering the tools to help you decide next steps. This may involve utilizing the healing power of exercise, art, or play; it may also involve processing your thoughts on a deeper level verbally or through writing. I believe optimal health encompasses the whole person physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and creatively. I see all these areas as connected. Because every person is unique, I will tailor our time to your individual needs and interests.

These include being person-centered, existential, and culturally sensitive –all of which invite curiosity and kindness towards the parts of oneself that are craving change.
Finding a therapist who is a good fit can be a daunting task -especially when we're feeling overwhelmed. The first step always requires strength, and you being here now is a great example of your resilience and urge to change. Therapy can be a safe place where we work together to discover the patterns and underlying barriers that keep you from feeling whole. That is why I never underestimate the importance of providing a warm, transparent, and non-judgmental space for us to explore the deepest parts of your experience.

I have advanced training in psychoanalytic and existential psychotherapy, focusing on helping you come to understand yourself and your issues in deeper and more helpful ways.
Many people who work with me have a strong desire not only to find relief from their suffering, but also have a desire to better understand how and why they find themselves suffering in similar ways, over and over again. Often people have tried other approaches to therapy with varying degrees of success, but are still searching for a way to resolve persistent and repetitive problems and to live fuller and more meaningful lives.

Existential therapy is woven into my sessions through the exploration of death, freedom, inescapable isolation, the sense of meaningfulness or meaninglessness, and identity.
I believe that the counseling session should be a place where people can take a break from the daily grind and invest in themselves in meaningful ways. In my practice, I encourage individuals to share the richness of their life stories, to replace oppressive thought patterns, and to reclaim their unique contribution to the world. My approach to counseling is integrated. I believe that unique individuals require unique therapy. It is my job to shape the therapeutic experience to best fit the needs of the individual.

The relationship between client and clinician is a key component of treatment efficacy. I believe that this therapeutic relationship is founded in a spirit of collaboration, an emotional bond and an agreement on goals and tasks. Two main characteristics of therapy are critical to the building of this therapeutic alliance: expertise and compassion. I am confident in my ability to help resolve any issues in a satisfying manner, prepared in both theory and practice, clear in my thoughts, ideas, and logical in the problem solving process. Of equal importance, I am accepting, understanding and genuinely interested in you and your needs.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
