While I would describe my overall approach as eclectic, I am primarily interested in an existential/humanistic approach but also bring in aspects of psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, person-centered, cognitive behavioral, as well as reflective practice approaches, among others.
Hello, my name is Rebecca Anderson and I have worked in the mental health field for almost 23 years and have been licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California for over 13 years. I practice direct, open, and honest communication, and encourage that in others, focusing on self-empowerment, self-care, and healthy boundaries. My approach is reflective and insight-oriented and fosters self-knowledge and self-acceptance.

I offer in person, outdoor eco-garden sessions (w/ indoor & phone when needed.) I laugh a lot with my clients and though the work of healing can be painful, my clients usually begin to feel better and keep coming. I work well with creative people, BIPOC, and across the spectrums of straight to queer and mono to poly. I have specializations in Psychoanalytic psychotherapy, Mindfulness, Buddhist and Existential psychotherapy and a background in philosophy. I collaborate with your highest functioning self to support your confused, critical, scared young parts. The psyche is resilient and thrives on love and therapeutic attention.

My background is in the application of existential philosophy and psychoanalytic ideas to clinical practice.
People who come to see me are suffering in some way, whether it be with work, relationships, or other issues, and they want to know why and what they can do about it. Some people have identified the problem as having to do with a mental health diagnosis, stress, intimacy issues, or some other term that has helped them describe the outward appearance of the problem. However, they have come to therapy because these descriptions do not get to the heart of the problem. With time and a good therapist, therapy is the perfect place to confide your thoughts with another and find a better way through the challenges of life.

My approach is depth-oriented, transpersonal, relational, and existential-humanistic.
I work with clients who are (highly) sensitive, empathic, or intuitive. Sensitive people have a finely attuned nervous system that is a huge gift when made conscious. They experience life deeply, yet don't always feel easily understood by others. Growing up, they often experienced not fitting in, and have adapted to a largely non-sensitive world in myriad ways that didn't always serve their best interest. I support sensitive people on their path to finding their voice, experiencing genuine relationships, purposeful work, and reclaiming their space in the world.

I have extensive training in humanistic/existential modalities.
Welcome. Are you ready for the work necessary to make real, enduring change? Do you have a troubling personal issue or suffer from general dissatisfaction? My orientation is to focus on the unconscious, the elusive essence of the problem. A powerful process unfolds when change occurs at this level of the mind. This opens the space for authentic personal transformation.

Are you currently searching for a sense of meaning and purpose in your life? Do you find yourself in an existential/spiritual emergency? Are you exploring your personal identity, expression, or sexuality? I help people of all ages increase self-awareness and decrease symptomology by bringing unconscious material into conscious awareness. Mental health concerns eventually arise because deep in our mind/body/soul we yearn for authenticity/individuation. Together we can explore which aspects of ourselves that no longer serve us to let go, in order to make space for something new to enter.

My clinical approach to psychotherapy is an eclectic mix of Humanistic/Existential, Solutions-Focused, Psychodynamic/Relational, Emotionally Focused, Family Systems, Cognitive-Behavioral theories and many more.
Carl Jung said: “It is what you are that heals, not what you know”. The journey of self-discovery is exactly that – getting to know and deeply appreciating your true and authentic self, even when that essence may be covered by trauma, hardship and suffering. It is this uncovering that many who experience psychotherapy to be transformative and healing refer to as a “re-birth”, a coming home to and an unfolding of who you truly are. Engaging in the process of self-inquiry can be a rewarding and even a life-changing experience, especially in the presence of an empathic and compassionate other.

I also value working at your pace, meaning that the work can be very deep and existential, slow and situational, or anything in between.
I very much value my work as a therapist and hope to create a safe emotional space for clients. I have the most experience working with males with emotional and intimacy issues, and if I had to pick a specialty, that would be it. I have continuously enjoyed breaking long standing stereotypes about what exactly therapy is and who it is for.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
