Becoming the adults and/or partners we want to be is often a transformational and evolutionary process. I support couples with building security, & women and men who are eager to gain deeper self-understanding and reparent themselves, who want to heal from wounds of past relationships and their upbringing, and ultimately live more free. I often work with spiritually inclined folks who are in the self-discovery process and offer existential support, exploring our role in the web of existence and the meaning of being here. I also support folks in the healing process with chronic illness, trauma, binge eating, anxiety, & grief.

I work with depression and anxiety, both specific and existential.
We all have ideals-- how we think we should feel, how we feel we should think, how we want others to behave towards us, how we want our life to unfold. When reality doesn’t match our ideals, it can bring confusion, frustration, even despair. We may feel trapped between our ideals and reality, leading us to believe we are spinning in circles. I see the therapeutic process as one that allows for an exploration of these ideals and an opportunity to understand how they play a role in one’s relationship with self and with others. My hope is that, through this process, you will find a deeper clarity of your values, wants, and needs.

I draw from CBT, psychodynamic theories, relational psychology, existential psychology, and humanism in my practice.
Life can sometimes feel like a place where we need to be perfect. Therapy is a place where we are encouraged to be flawed.

I work with diverse folks and use: Psychodynamic, mindfulness, body awareness, cognitive-behavioral, existential, feminist, and narrative therapy approaches to achieve self-compassion and understanding of one's well being.
We all go through challenges. Oppressive experiences, trauma, dominant narratives, and social conditioning from our upbringing affect our emotions, moods, nervous systems, and sense of self. These experiences show up as: identity/sexuality issues, depression, anxiety, low self-value, difficulty staying present, and problems with our interpersonal and romantic relationships. You want to make changes and be seen, but it's scary and difficult if you don’t know how or know where to start. By working together, we can safely work towards finding the authentic, whole person that already resides in you.

STUCK. You're not sure exactly why, but there's a nagging sense that something's off. You might call it an existential crisis. Maybe it feels like a depression, or being lost and anxious. Whatever it is, I see it a CROSS-ROADS: a chance to choose a different, more fulfilling life. I believe that the uncomfortable things you're feeling - worry, fear, frustration, or no motivation or excitement about life - are a signal from the wisdom of your deeper, truest self that something needs to CHANGE. Will you answer the call?

A in Marriage & Family Therapy, believing the optimal way to address the existential challenges particular to our current social landscape hinges on our ability to address how we internalize broader social discourse at the local level of individual experience.
If you identify as Polyamorous/Non-monogamous, Kinky, Queer/Trans or Anti-capitalist, you already know the tyrannical way normativity polices “Others” who deviate from conventional cultural scripts. Even more so when your preferred expressions of intimacy and embodiment are deemed “problematic”. I do not equate “healthy” with “normal”. Nor am I prescriptive about how you ought to experience your life & relationships. Living along the fringes of normativity isn’t an easy choice. But it can be a worthy choice, fulfilling and purposeful! And yet it may also be accompanied by high costs that feel compromising to dignity & self-worth.

I am guided by a wealth of life experience, the value of unconditional positive regard, existential philosophy, some Cognitive Behavioral Techniques, and respect for Gestalt and Jungian ideas.
I work with individuals and couples, exploring the present and past to gain the greater awareness that I believe leads to more potential for choice and desired change. My strength lies in empathy, connection, and acceptance. Using relational therapy, we will honor your unique self, social circumstances, perspectives and goals. I use collaborative conversation, relational listening, and mindfulness to elevate awareness and build behavioral confidence. I prioritize creating a safe space where all you think, feel, and dream can be explored...the deep dark, high light, and the plentiful mundane that compose every life.

I work primarily from a psychodynamic framework, with a focus not only on symptom relief but on making substantive changes and assisting individuals in breaking free from unhealthy and unhelpful patterns impacting their wellbeing, career, and relationships. Traumas can result in unconscious "triggers" that wreak havoc on a person’s goals for health, intimacy, success, sense of connection, or even the ability to process grief, and can manifest in the form of unmanageable anxiety, depression, substance use, existential dilemmas, self-sabotage, feeling stuck, or repeating poor choices. Developing a better way to cope can transform you.

I've seen how life changing therapy can be ... it certainly has been for me. My work centers around family issues, finding and growing healthy relationships, exploring existential issues such as work, career, unrealized desires and ambitions, and and overcoming issues such as anxiety, depression, insecurity and anger. I work with men, women and couples. The title of my first book, "I Can't Believe My Life Has Come to This" was born from hearing it many times in my office. So..if you're ready to take control of your life and operationalize your dreams, we may be a great match. I look forward to speaking with you,..

My specialties/clinical interests include: depression, self-compassion, trauma, grief, identity, adult ADHD, relationship difficulties, Alzheimer's/dementia, and existential issues.
If you’re looking for a therapist who shows up authentically, provides heartfelt warmth and empathy, and who doesn’t mind using humor or the occasional curse word when appropriate, I hope you'll reach out! Modern life is complex. While our shared world buzzes with relentless motion and change, oppressive systems often feel fixed and difficult to budge. Working towards healing and growth can feel daunting, if not sometimes impossible. I believe a supportive therapeutic relationship can be massively empowering while navigating life's seemingly endless sorrows, joys, and complications.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
