Hi there, I’m Ali! I am a second-generation Cambodian American who comes from a community of Muslim refugees. It goes without saying that I am intimately familiar with generational trauma, and it’s the reason I entered the field of mental health. Through my own journey of self-discovery, I’ve come to realize the importance of healing our traumas and its impact on our overall well-being. I am passionate about working with individuals and couples who come from historically marginalized communities. I believe that with the right tools and support everybody has the capability to heal and grow.

I employ evidence-based practices such as Emotion-Focused Therapy, Mindfulness, Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, and EFIT.
When you get stuck, it's wise to enlist the support of professionals. An experienced therapist can help you create secure and meaningful relationships, overcome emotional pain, find clarity and meaning, and handle stressful situations effectively. My counseling practice often involves supporting people who struggle with relationships, depression, anxiety, trauma, and coping with difficulties. Couples work involves breaking through old, stuck patterns that create conflict and disconnection to create strong and satisfying partnerships.

My work is rooted in evidence-based work from the gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, & cognitive-behavioral based approaches.
Do you find yourself spending hours going in circles talking or thinking about something with no resolution, & in the end feel unheard and alone? Which then in turn perpetuates worries, the inability to trust your own thoughts, & then feeling like its better to do everything on your own. Without connection we are merely surviving & perpetuating the idea that we have to experience this life on our own. While under the surface we wonder why we feel out of control and lost.

I use a mindfulness-based somatic approach which often includes integrated breathwork & MBSR tools, EMDR, CBT, & EFT to address the whole body impacts of processing.
These beautiful, unpredictable, messy moments of life shape us, & I've learned that defining who we are through these moments helps us build the life we want. As a trauma-certified EMDR trained therapist, I work with a wide range of issues, & I specialize in grief, trauma, & illness/medical trauma. Whether recent circumstances are stressful, or aspects of the past need to be reconciled & faced, my clients are working to process, cope, & move toward holistic healing. They want to own their lives & feel better. They want clarity, meaning, understanding, & support working through daily challenges, anxieties, and stress management.

The goals of therapy are directed toward providing a positive and collaborative forum to ease presenting difficulties; and draw on the individual's strengths and resilience to enable greater contentment and satisfaction in life. The foundation from which I view issues is from a systems approach. Thus, my focus is on the relational context that each individual resides within. Additionally, I borrow ideas from Attachment , Emotionally Focused, Cognitive-Behavioral, and EMDR constructs when tailoring goals developed for each person's unique needs.

If you are seeking to work through anxiety, depression, an identity issue, a life transition, a traumatic experience, or a loss, I may be the therapist to help you. As a Certified Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapist, I can also help couples deeply reconnect on the level of needs and feelings--as opposed to having that same unproductive argument over and over again. With individuals, I often work in the here-and-now. Additionally, I pay attention to your history in order to understand (together with you) how your past experiences might be affecting your capacity to live well in the present and imagine a future.

I have specialized training in relational issues for couples and use an EFT lens.
I specialize in couples therapy, where I help partners work toward relational repair after infidelity, betrayal, or ongoing conflict. I also work with individuals who want to work through attachment and relationship issues, identity development, spirituality, trauma, anxiety, and depression. Therapy is work that asks a great deal from us, but it also holds potential for meaningful change: to awaken to your own life, to make strides toward repairing broken bonds, and to imagine new possibilities and new ways of being, for yourself and for your relationships.

I am trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Gottman Method Couples Therapy.
Are you and your partner feeling disconnected? Maybe you’ve been arguing a lot these days. Or perhaps you want to strengthen your relationship and learn the skills to prevent problems before they even begin. You're ready to experience new ways of connecting with each other, but aren't sure where to start. Couples therapy is a space where you and your partner can explore what a fulfilling relationship looks like for you. You're in the right place if you want to work on communicating productively, reducing conflict, increasing understanding, building trust, navigating differences, and deepening intimacy and connection.

You may be struggling to see and believe in the goodness of yourself and others. You desire a change in these relationships. I support my clients in finding a compassionate and just relationship with themselves and the world around them by exploring implicit and explicit material in their historical and current narratives. I engage and help clients in an emotionally-focused and somatically-present space. We take our biggest steps to healing when we feel cared for, loved, and heard.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
