Life can be overwhelming and emotional when children and adolescents are struggling with mental health concerns and challenges. Trauma leaves feelings of anxiety, depression, worthlessness that can make everyday interactions a struggle. Individuals need to feel safe, secure, feel valued and have a sense of belonging to fully participate in their lives. Treatment options should focus on their developmental stage, strengths and values. Building self-esteem, confidence and self image is the first step to healing.

I view the relationship between the client and therapist as the most important aspect of therapy. I value creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space in which clients feel comfortable being open about their experiences. I spend time getting to know my clients, listening to their needs, and meeting them where they are. I utilize an integrative approach to treatment, emphasizing emotion-focused and interpersonal process theories, along with evidence-based techniques.

I understand that it takes considerable courage to ask for help, particularly when it comes to mental health and the stigma surrounding therapy. This means I am deeply committed to making the counseling experience as gentle and meaningful as possible for all my clients. I believe in the power of community and that the relationship between the client and counselor is an extremely important part of the healing process. Therefore, it is a privilege and a priority for me to be worthy of the trust of my clients; my goal is to offer people a judgment-free space that feels safe and genuine.

Feeling stuck and not knowing which way to turn? Feeling overwhelmed and not sure how to ask for help? Not sure what to try next? I have been there. Unsure, overwhelmed, and afraid of what I might discover if I looked inside. That is where I began my own journey back in 1987. That is how I know that there is hope. It is unfortunate, that we don’t get to pick our parents or early care givers. For many of us, the experiences from early childhood, shape who we are today and how we interact with the world around us. These experiences are powerful influences on how we cope with life stress and even the partners we chose in life.

Everyone has a story – the story of our earliest relationships, the story of our earliest world, the story of how we learned what it looks like and feels like to love and be loved by another. Sometimes, our story comes with a script that may have helped us at one time, but no longer fits. It’s then that we find ourselves at odds with our loved ones, out of touch with ourselves, and confused about what’s going on. This can show up as anxiety, destructive relationship patterns, or a feeling of being “stuck”. When you're in the middle of this storm, it's hard to know what's real, let alone how to reach a sense of cohesion and peace.

I believe my job is to work myself out of a job. It is my task to assist individuals in cultivating the skills and understanding they need to optimize their well being in all spheres in their life. Through an honest, trusting collaborative relationship I endeavor to facilitate my client's capacity to create healthy relationships, both with themselves and others. I strive to be flexible in supporting clients in the manner in which they need versus an authoritative manner which presumes I know what is best for them. My goal is to assist them in determining their best selves.

I have experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, and older adults. While I use a variety of approaches (including AEDP, Existential Theory, Attachment Theory, and CBT), ultimately I like to let our work together inform which approach suits our time best. I am knowledgeable about trauma-informed practice and bring a lot of my own life experiences into the sessions, through my work as a teacher, professional firefighter, and professionaI musician.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
