my style is approachable, interactive, and relational. i honor and value the uniqueness of who you are and welcome it in therapy. we get to be ourselves, putting down all the stories and roles we've told we should be. i work with mindfulness, somatic awareness, and emotionally-focused approaches that take a holistic approach towards your healing, honoring the mind-body-soul connection. i care about exploring your emotions, helping their expression while making sense of them. in couples therapy, i focus on how the system is working, developing awareness of emotions, healthy communication, boundary setting, and conflict resolution.

With couples, I draw on my training with Sue Johnson in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples.
In the therapy session, I work to create a safe place to be our true, human selves—where both our worst and best qualities will in time be revealed. I work in the here-and-now: exploring your present concerns and goals more than your past history. I know that empathy promotes healing and ask for feedback to be sure my clients feel understood. I provide resources, tools and skills clients can use between sessions. I also work to help people learn self-compassion (see www.self-compassion.org), since that ability is necessary to heal and grow.

My work is eclectic and is primarily informed by; Psychodynamics, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness.
I work with individuals and couples struggling with unhealthy recurrent patterns within themselves and in relationships. I believe therapy can be a powerful opportunity for people to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and make meaning of their past experiences. Being stuck with deep seated patterns often continue to cause us pain and suffering and my hope is to be able to create a safe warm environment for people to explore what aspects of their past may be getting in the way of their present and future. I work in a collaborative fashion, hoping to help people find their truth.

I'm primarily psychodynamic/attachment based in theory, but knowledgeable & skilled in various treatment modalities (motivational interviewing/CBT/EFT/IFS).
I specialize in attachment theory, addiction/addiction related issues, & becoming more aligned with your authentic self. I also enjoy working with couples wanting to strengthen communication skills or rebuild trust within their relationship. Caregivers were the first to teach us how to relate to others. Healthy relationships are often not modeled for us & we wonder why the same patterns repeat. I can help you gain insight into these patterns & we will work together to have healthier relationships. My goal is to get to know you, establish a strong connection, and provide a safe space to begin your healing journey together.

Whatever your goals and challenges, I welcome the opportunity to see whether I may be a good fit for your journey.

I also specialize in EFT, a therapy approach that is informed by neuroscience and attachment theory, that helps clients get unstuck from old relationship patterns.
It’s a struggle to deal with anxiety, a harmful inner critic, or unsatisfying relationship dynamics. It can be hard to feel playful, to easily connect to others, to get your emotional needs met, or to feel at ease in your body. Whether you feel overwhelmed by your emotions or cut off from them, you know you want to do things differently but aren’t sure how. While I don’t work with couples, I do specialize in working with individuals who are carrying around belief systems that are keeping them anxious or detached in relationships.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
