I’m influenced by Emotionally Focused Therapy and several other therapeutic models including family systems theory, IFS (internal family systems), and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy).
Whether you’re in a season of conflict in a relationship or just feeling overwhelmed with the burdens of life, you don’t have to suffer alone. Through counseling, you can make sense of your experiences and gain support as you move toward better days.

I really do enjoy working with individuals and groups and seek to have an authentic and warm therapeutic relationship with my clients. Building trust is paramount to successful treatment and my approach is to start with a more open and conversational tone after assessment. The process will focus on feelings and creating a space to foster more sensitive conversations. My own life experiences have guided me to this ‘feeling work’. My life’s purpose is to use the gift for seeing the strengths in people to assist the client in finding their genuine self. Past clients have described me as “caring”, “empathic” and “helpful”.

Life is about transitions, changing and growing in ways we don’t expect, don’t understand, and sometimes don’t enjoy very much, nonetheless always striving to become something more than we are right now. I’ve experienced many transitions in fifty years of life, and I’ve come to realize that we are going to change some kind of way. The greatest question is will we let life sweep us along, or will we choose to aim for a destination, collecting stories and wisdom – and yes, more than a few scars – as we go?

Hi, I'm Kate. I provide counseling to individuals and couples in the north Seattle area. My approach to therapy begins with relationship as I believe both harm and healing happen within the context of relationships. Perhaps you are tired of feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or depressed. Maybe you've experienced a significant loss that has shifted your roles and beliefs. You don't have to figure this out alone. My focus is to develop a trusting relationship with you and provide a safe environment where you can tell your story, feel accepted, and experience the wholeness and healing that comes out of that process.

It's worth mentioning that a mental health diagnosis is not required to begin therapy. I love providing a space for people to feel heard and validated in their experiences, past or present. I work best with those who are motivated for therapy, curious about themselves and open to learning new things. I focus on treating individuals with anxiety, trauma, depression and/or ADHD by building self-esteem, habits, routines and coping skills to improve their daily functioning.

You’re seeking me out because you’ve either been impacted by narcissistic abuse (complex trauma) or you have OCD that is impinging on your quality of life. Either way, you are struggling with emotional pain that you’re not sure how to manage. Most of your life you’ve kept things inside because it never felt totally safe to reveal your real feelings, opinions, or thoughts, which only causes you more distress. Now, you’d like to experience more inner peace, self-acceptance, and liberation from what isn’t serving you anymore. You see the possibility of living a life with more ease and confidence, you just need help getting there.

I invite you into a safe, confidential, & caring environment to receive help with anxiety, depression, and difficult situations in your life. Many of us long to be truly seen, heard, & known. I have over 10 years of experience working with people, their emotional needs, & their personal journey towards growth & healing. My hope is that you feel my deep valuing of your life experience, a sense of honor for your uniqueness & my belief for positive change within you.

We all want to be seen and understood and at the same time are afraid of what we and others will find. We don't trust ourselves or our decisions. We suffer from anxiety, depression, traumas and a myriad of other relational issues. In counseling we learn to understand ourselves and others by telling our stories well. As a greek philosopher once said, "An unexamined life isn't worth living". When we learn to examine ourselves with curiosity, compassion, and truth our life becomes clear hopeful and fullfilling.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
