I have focused my training on relationship methods that include The Gottman Method, EFT, IFS, and Bowen Family Systems.
At the heart of our struggles and pains are relationships. At the heart of our hopes and dreams are relationships. Whether it is your relationship with anxiety and depression, with your career, with your partner, sister, son, daughter, boss, or parent-everything is about relationships. Therapy helps you tackle some of the most challenging questions we all face. How do we repair what needs to be fixed in our relationships, including the relationship with ourselves? What needs attention, a new perspective, a better skill, or emotional resolve to enable you to become more authentic and improve your connection to self and others?

Start seeing challenges as opportunities to get your needs met and improve your relationship! I’m Dr. Sean Robertson, creator of RDP. I work as an online Couples Counselor and Intimacy Coach. I know relationships can be hard, even though they’re also one of the most fulfilling parts of our life. In my couples counseling I create an empathic space for learning and deep connection, while also being diligent about ensuring that clients implement the tools I teach. My methods are based in behavioral psychology, Gottman Method, and attachment psychology.

Psychotherapy is about building relationships. In seeking a therapist, it's important to find one who "gets you"; is able to understand your unique way of relating to the world and to others in your life. My goal is to be accepting of who you are, to help you better understand patterns in your life that are holding you back. I seek to create an environment where you can develop trust, feel safe, respected, cared for. Psychotherapy can be scary and requires a commitment on the part of both the therapist and the client. Although the road is sometimes painful, we travel through it together.

You may be emotionally, physically, or spiritually in a space in your life that you might describe as challenging, confusing, and/or uncontrollable. There might be different struggles, that somehow reflect a similar underlying process. Perhaps, one that involves fear, avoidance, escaping, 'trying so hard', and eventually feeling helpless. Though our struggles may differ on the exterior, the underlying process is what often reflects our perspectives and emotional health. Addressing vs resisting our challenges can deepen our confidence in our ability to work through them. Thus, creating the space for a calm and grounded experience.

My clients are individuals and couples who are ready to take a deeper look into themselves and the thoughts and behaviors that aren't serving them any longer. Maybe they've noticed patterns in their lives and/or relationships that they'd like to step away from or help their partners with; issues like explosive anger, emotional withdrawal, people pleasing, codependency, substance abuse, depression, or anxiety. These patterns may be longstanding or they may have arisen as a result of a recent grief or other trauma event. My clients feel there's more to life then what they may be living, they just don't know how to access it yet.

I believe each of us can lead lives of authenticity, balance, and purpose through mindfulness and self-reflection. I aim to create a warm, peaceful space for healing and awakening, a place where you can slow down your breath, calm the chattering of your mind, and get in touch with the deeper parts of yourself. My goal is to empower you to be your own compass and access your own inner strength and resilience. We all need someone we can count on: to listen, to try to understand, and to walk side by side as we travel rocky terrain. I would be honored to go on that journey with you.

I am not a “blank slate”, distant and analyzing therapist. I am present and “in it” with my clients. Being real helps my clients see and experience they aren’t alone. Compassion, empathy, emotional awareness, and heart-centeredness are the fundamental ingredients of my therapy. Mindfulness-based techniques are critical to how I help clients slow down, recognize what emotions are coming up, and better tolerate them. While I have experience working with a wide range of concerns, my main expertise is in couples work, trauma, anxiety, depression, and performance anxiety/stage fright.

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” - Anais Nin. Creativity, liberation, and transformation — getting your power back — these are core tenants in my practice. My approach merges reflective space to spark insight with concrete tools and strategies to drive change. I draw from existential philosophy, the arts, and culture, as well as research and theory to match unique needs with individualized treatments that resonate.

It is natural to encounter challenges beyond our understanding and ability to manage that induce stress, anxiety and depression. We may have reached a puzzling crossroads in life, we may be in conflict with ourselves and others, or we may want more harmony and direction in our lives. We may have been deeply wounded or traumatized in childhood. Sometimes all we know is we feel anxious, depressed, or something is missing or wrong. Psychotherapy offers powerful approaches to these issues, and the transformation we seek comes naturally from a genuine, healthy human relationship with a skilled, compassionate psychotherapist.

While you can't always avoid the challenges that arise in your life, you do have choices about how you address them. My approach draws from the idea that there is much to learn from these struggles, and that by decreasing the shame that makes it hard for you to face yourself, you create opportunities for making real and enduring changes in your life. But you don't have to do this alone.

Grief can be complex-sometimes our relationships with people we have lost are complicated and the process of aging and passing on is not something that many people openly talk about or acknowledge and can add to the burden of grief. Our society is also one of quick fixes, fast moves, and instant gratification, so the slow and arduous process of grieving does not typically get the space it deserves. Too often we are forced to get back to work, back to being happy, back to being "normal" when things are anything but.

We all need tools to help us navigate the difficulties of life. I am lucky to be in a position to help people gain these tools. I love working with my clients; I am always learning from them. I have a down-to-earth, accessible and active approach to my work. I draw from a variety of therapeutic techniques. I am sensitive to the interplay between social, economic, racial, emotional, and neurological factors. I continue to work in community and non-profit settings. In the Spring of 2016, I earned an Advanced Certificate from the Existential Humanistic Institute.

Let's work together to clear the obstacles in the way of living your best life. If you feel ready to find insight into your patterns, heal old wounds, and develop new more effective ways of being in the world and in your relationships, I'd love to support you. I'll collaborate with you to process stuck emotions, gain clarity on your goals and values, and find empowerment and freedom to move forward in your life. Anxious, depressed, grief of loss of a relationship, close one, job, etc: you have come to the right place. As we all slowly crawl through the adversity presented in our lives, into a world that feels a little less organized and a little more uncertain, we may find what once was no longer is and how do we be with what we have and get to where we want to go. Complex, isn’t it. But historically, humans have recovered from unforeseen crisis, stronger and better than ever. And historically, they have sought the help of others to guide them to see where they really are at and where they can be.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
