Best combination includes a client motivated to make realistic changes. Open to the idea we are not "stuck!" He/she/they are ready to try new strategies or perspectives to alter their day, week and manage stresses with more confidence. The client ready to be candid and find a therapist with smarts, practical, insightful skills and compassion. "A new view" fits the goals for a person who can be a therapy "team member!"

My focus is to help each individual gain self-awareness, self-compassion, and overall confidence in his, her, or their ability to understand and manage overwhelming emotions, stress, and ongoing psychological and behavioral problems. When we are defeated or don’t feel like ourselves, it is easy to focus on the negatives; I help individuals, couples, and families rediscover their strengths and the positive attributes that empower them toward growth and happiness. I am passionate about kids, women’s issues, building healthy relationships, increasing self-esteem, and healing family dynamics (including teaching parenting skills).

Everyone is different and I have found over the years that people find many ways to cope. I work to help you cultivate those skills that are working and provide additional skills to help with healthy coping while providing opportunities to work through current and past life stressors in a non-biased or judgmental way. Focusing on these strategies consistently helps people start feeling better and less stressed. My goal is for you to find how therapy can help you feel better, with the added support and sense of not needing to do your journey all on your own.

Not accepting new clients
I utilize skills and techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT & Trauma Focused CBT), Art and Play Therapy, EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness and more.
We can't do everything, on our own, all the time. Sometimes reaching out for help feels like surrendering. I'm passionate about helping individuals and families create a life they enjoy. I am here to help you navigate your way through this – and believe it or not, I may have done this a time or two! My education/training are ideal for working with kids, families and young adults who are struggling with life transitions, relationships and past traumatic events. As a Registered Play Therapist I believe counseling should be healing and fun- everyone has a super power to unleash and some kryptonite to harness!

I address these barriers through an EMDR relational-developmental model by helping clients gain insight of how their formative years impact the present.
Therapy can help anyone. We all have seasons where we feel stuck, and a safe professional can offer you paths of growth and healing that may not seem obvious given the circumstances. I believe everyone has the capacity to make changes in their life for the better. Some common needs that are addressed in counseling include: improving emotional regulation, alleviating symptoms of anger, depression, trauma, and anxiety. Importantly, counseling can offer a space for improving relationships, developing healthy family boundaries, and rebuilding the ability to trust. If you feel like you are on a hamster wheel, you are in the right place!

When working with traumatic and overwhelming experiences, I specialize in using somatic-focused EMDR.
Hi! I am currently seeing clients in person in Helena and providing telehealth across Western Montana. I am a relationship-oriented therapist striving to accept clients unconditionally wherever they are at in life. I believe (and research supports) therapy works best when client and therapist work together toward understanding the origins of dissatisfaction and finding freedom to truly be oneself. This process makes possible change that enhances the relationship with oneself and with others. I work with clients to develop greater openness to experience and greater capacity for the complexity of a richly lived life.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
