It is all too common to be struggling with stress, worry, low mood, and uncertainty in our world today. I work with people around issues of anxiety and depression, loss, the suffering of trauma, struggles with relationships or family or work, life changes and transitions, and creative blocks. Sometimes people come to therapy because of past issues. Sometimes they are stuck in repetitive patterns of thinking and feeling without even knowing it. Sometimes they don't feel true to themselves or they have lost their way or zest for life.

I have further developed my skills to include EMDR, Internal Family Systems Therapy and CognitiveTherapy.
If asked to share the most valuable lesson learned from my 20 years of social work practice my answer would be that the person seeking treatment is far more than a list of symptoms. I continue to draw inspiration from the courage and resiliency of my clients and stand firm in the conviction that with treatment and support we all possess the capacity for healing and emotional health. I am a Certified Trauma Therapist through the ITR Training Institute in Morgantown, WV where I received advanced training in the Instinctual Trauma Response (ITR) model developed by renowned clinicians, Drs. Louis Tinnin and Linda Gantt.

The body-centered, mindfulness-based psychotherapy approaches include Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization Response (EMDR) and Life Force Yoga level 1.
I specialize in depression, anxiety and trauma, and the use of alternative psychotherapy approaches. (However, I do offer traditional approaches). These new psychotherapies are body-centered and mindfulness-based. In other words, we are more than our thoughts - we are our sensations, feelings and that something which is greater than the self, the transpersonal. These new psychotherapies work directly with client's moment to moment awareness of what is felt or sensed within the body. These felt sensed experiences are then processed through cognition which then allow for the opportunity of insight, change and healing.

But specific treatments like Cognitive Processing Therapy, EMDR, CBT, and Exposure are- with mountains of research showing their effectiveness which I've also witnessed time and time again! After we explore your needs, values and goals we collaboratively decide on a therapy path.
I specialize in trauma &PTSD in adults often with childhood trauma. I also offer supervision, training and consultation. PTSD is a hidden wound that can hijack the mind and body. Common are feelings of shame, guilt, fear, sadness, anger, unwanted thoughts, feeling on guard, feeling distant from the joys in life, struggling with esteem, relationships and trust. Clients express a sense of profound "stuckness" accompanied by a disbelief that things could change or get better. But there's also a hope to hope- which can be scary but also brave. They want to get unstuck. They want calm. They want connection.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
