Bay Area Health Psychology is a group practice (see our website); I am the Director. I specialize in Clinical Health Psychology to assist people with chronic medical conditions, anxiety, and depression to manage their health and treatment. I also assist people with progressions of aging such as dementia, memory loss, and Alzheimer's Disease. And I help caregivers cope with the tasks of living with someone with a chronic condition. I provide EMDR treatment using a special web application, and offer Couples/Marital Therapy based on a "dynamic interaction" model developed during my research at UCLA plus training by the Gottmans.

Among these is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, which has been shown to be an effective way to resolve the impact of past trauma and adverse life experiences.
I found my calling to become a psychotherapist out of a desire to help people live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives. I work with individuals, couples and families to help them resolve the impact of abuse and trauma, as well as problems of depression, anxiety, anger, grief, couples' discord, family conflicts, behavioral issues, low self-esteem, and life transitions. I am passionate about helping my clients who feel lost about their life directions with career exploration and identity development. As a Christian, I also love integrating spirituality with psychological well-being with clients for whom spirituality is relevant.

Trained in expressive arts/drama therapy, EMDR, as well as talk therapy, I have witnessed the power of creative expression to accelerate the therapeutic process.
Have you suffered a loss, experienced some traumatic event or lived through an unexpected change or transition? Are you feeling lost, missing a connection with yourself and/or others? Or, are you finding yourself stuck in unhelpful patterns in your relationships, school/work, and the ways you see yourself? I see psychotherapy as an opportunity for you to be with yourself - authentically and constructively. My intention is to create a safe place where you can experience solace, explore solutions creatively, and discover your needs while learning how to ask for them.

EMDR is the vehicle that will help you get there.
Have you ever felt alone in a crowded room? Had an overwhelming feeling of wanting to cry, but not really sure why? Thoughts and worries that keep you up at night? You are not alone, many of us struggle with depression and anxiety in our everyday lives. These struggles might cause us to not perform our best at work, keep us from concentrating in school and cause us to say things that we don’t mean to the ones that we love. I can help you identify what you want to improve in your life and create a safe space for you to be able to overcome the barriers preventing you from succeeding.

You’re checked out. It’s as if your life was set to autopilot and you’re just going through the motions, one day after another. Regularly, thoughts drift into your mind like “Is this all there is? Is this who I want to be?” You have some close relationships in your life, but it feels like no one really knows you. It’s as if you’re wearing a mask that says all the right things, that blends in, that doesn’t step out of the comfort zone and makes sure everyone else is happy. You’re exhausted putting this act on all of the time, trying to be what everyone wants you to be.

Successful therapy is a combination of your life experiences coupled with my skill set in a caring, supportive environment. When you put those things together your life will begin to change in ways you have secretly hoped were possible. I often am asked how looking at past experiences and feelings can enhance our future. Basically, "why waste time looking backwards?" My answer is this: When we don't take time to reflect on unconscious patterns we often repeat them; even ones that don't serve us. It's time to break that chain.

Using a variety of evidence based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy & Mindfulness, our sessions will be productive and healing.
I cannot move mountains for you, but I can help you climb. Facing fears, healing from loss, finding meaning and joy - these are the inevitable tasks of life. Therapy may be your first step or your last resort. Often people avoid it all together because they believe their pain is too great, worry they will be judged or that their situation is too complicated. Some people believe they should solve problems on their own or only with family and friends. However, while family and friends may want the best for us, they often come with opinions or past hurts. Sometimes it helps to have a safe space outside your daily experience.

Through being trained in many different modalities including art therapy and EMDR I have learned that every person needs to approach problems in a way unique to them.
Your therapeutic journey can be incredibly rewarding and difficult at the same time. Anxiety, trauma, and depression can make us feel lost and the road through is muddy and overwhelming. This is why having a guide that can understand you and meet you where you are, is incredibly important. It is my goal to help you navigate this voyage as well as hold and work through complex emotions as they fight with each other while at the same time cohabitating in the same space. I look forward to taking those first steps with you and take this journey together.

I utilize evidence-based therapy strategies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).
We all have the natural ability to heal and grow to our full potential.  In children and adolescents this ability is enormously powerful but can be disrupted by stress and obstacles, both internal and external.  You are probably seeking therapy for yourself or your child, to find a way to overcome these obstacles and move forward with healing and growth. For 20 years, I have helped children, adolescents and their families find the skills they need for healthy emotional development.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence based modality that can help reprocess the traumatic memory.
Are you having trouble concentrating? Is falling asleep and/or staying asleep becoming more difficult? Are you worrying a lot more than usual? Do you have ruminating thoughts that aren't helpful and just won't go away? You might be suffering from acute traumatic distress or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from a traumatic experience recent or many years ago. This could include being a victim of or witness to a natural disaster, chronic verbal, sexual, physical or emotional abuse, an accident, or a major life transition that was upsetting.

If you've been in talk therapy for years & are still having difficulty in your everyday life & relationships, EMDR Therapy can be a powerful tool to help you finally break through old patterns of behaving, thinking and being in the world.
I believe in the innate power of human beings to heal & grow. You don't have to live with the pain of old experiences weighing you down or keeping you stuck; healing is possible & within reach. Are you struggling in relationships or at work? Are you trying to be the person, parent, or partner you want to be, but missing the mark? Do you want to finally learn to accept (& love) yourself fully & unconditionally, & allow others to love you as well? Counseling can help you find freedom & clarity and let go of what's holding you back. I'm certified in EMDR & can offer this modality for healing in addition to traditional talk therapy.

I am also privileged to work with women experiencing PTSD, anxiety, depression, and alcoholism. I provide clear, direct, and supportive feedback to those I serve while holding space with deep empathy and compassion.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
