, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Family Systems, and Imago Therapy.
It has been my privilege for the last 30 years in assisting my clients in resolving a variety of challenges - anxiety, depression, unresolved grief, unresolved trauma (both childhood and adult), marital problems and divorce recovery. Often when faulty learning (i.e., Stinkin' Thinkin') results from traumatic events or unhealthy relationships, effective help requires applying psychological, social and spiritual resources.

In my 19 years as a therapist, I have worked with a range of clients, such as co-dependency, anger, OCD, phobias, panic disorders, and PTSD & trauma with individuals, couples, and families, and I have learned every client is vastly different. One thing that is the same is that the goal for the client is always moving towards living kind of the life they want to live. What that looks like is different for everyone because we all have our own set of values. But the stronger our values, the harder it can be to accept ourselves and others in the world. I help clients find that balance for themselves!

Here are things clients said about working with me: "The number one quality you bring to your practice is kindness...your respect for me has allowed me the space to find respect for myself." "I have gained some real understanding of myself, my own struggles and patterns...this has helped me to let go of behaviors and thoughts that don't work..."

Feeling overwhelmed or burned out from stress and a seemingly endless cycle of demands? Do you wish you could slow down, but it feels like you just can’t? Do you feel like you are taking care of everyone else and wonder who is taking care of you? Are you struggling with what you're feeling because you "should" feel great? Do you think back to a time when things were going well and wonder how you could get back there? Or maybe it feels like you can’t remember when things were going well, but you know you can feel better. No one has it all together and it is exhausting to try to pretend. You don't have to continue in that cycle.

When worry and self-doubt feel like a constant companion it may be difficult to focus on work, family, relationships. When you find yourself avoiding things such as conversations, that tennis practice or game, or that outing with friends, that feeling of uneasiness increases. You now fear the impact on your relationships, with colleagues, friends and loved ones as well as on your future goals. Now imagine learning and utilizing skills that allow you to overcome the stressors in your life while developing and nurturing your relationships.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
