The meltdowns never seem to end- is this normal? Talk therapy won’t work for him... how do I help? He can’t accept “no,” her energy levels are off the charts… This is a snapshot of what my clients are often struggling with when they first seek out therapy for their child. They know that being asked to sit and talk about their feelings won’t be impactful for their child, and that they need something different. I specialize in supporting kids with chronic dysregulation, trauma, and neurodiverse profiles through a sensory-focused and play based approach to therapy- in a space that looks more like a play-gym than a medical office.
My approach called Sensory Motor Arousal and Regulation Therapy (SMART) focuses on helping kids build a felt sense of safety in their bodies through child-led play and the use of regulating therapeutic equipment and sensory inputs. Rather than trying to think or talk our way out of dysregulation, SMART therapy helps kids process big feelings in their bodies.
When kids have access to sensory tools and a therapeutic relationship that helps their bodies feel safe, we often see a new opening of space to gently introduce new skills, process trauma, and allow your child to discover what soothes their nervous system. If what you read here resonates with you and your child, please feel free to reach out.
