I see my role as a counselor as providing empathy, unconditional acceptance, and genuineness to create a space that you, the client, can use for self-exploration and holistic growth. Another part of my role is helping to focus the counseling session on your inner experience to increase your awareness of your values, emotions, and ways of relating to others. A typical counseling session involves the client exploring their moment-to-moment inner experience, and me facilitating this exploration by asking questions, offering my observations, and reflecting back what I am hearing.
My work is based on person-centered therapy, as well as AEDP, an experiental, body-focused model of psychotherapy. I may draw attention to your moment-to-moment experience of how things are unfolding in therapy; for example, I might ask you to slow down and bring your focus to any bodily sensations that arise in response to what we are discussing.
Over time, the counseling journey can help you process difficult emotions, heal from trauma, find inner strength, and gain clarity on life. Like other vehicles of personal growth, counseling involves challenging yourself in new ways, but an empathetic, accepting, and encouraging guide can provide the support and safety needed to navigate the challenges.
