Eating disorders have the highest mortality of all psychiatric diagnoses. I'm a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist. You aren't sick because you want to be (see Neurobiology.) The change we need to live healthy can seem more difficult than the pain. The emptiness of escapism, whether through restriction, drugs, alcohol, food, etc. obscures your potential. If it's not dangerous, you don't have to run. When you practice avoidance, you also avoid experiences producing self-trust, self-confidence and self-esteem. If you want to practice bravery, I'm here. I teach skills and assign homework. I'm willing to work as hard as you are.

Through graduate training, clinical experience, and research, I have developed expertise in the following areas: men and masculinity; eating disorders and body image concerns; mental health concerns related to spirituality/faith; healing from trauma and unwanted sexual experiences; positive psychology; and health psychology.
Thank you for visiting my profile. I provide psychotherapy and assessment services to adults (individuals, couples, and groups) who are struggling to thrive. I help others increase insight into their struggles and make concrete changes toward experiencing a more fulfilling life. During difficult times it is common to struggle with daily functioning while also trying to heal broader psychological and emotional concerns (e.g., trauma, relational struggles, problematic behavior). Therefore, I often will establish short-term and long-term goals, collaboratively with you, so that counseling can be sustainable, supportive, and effective.

Welcome. In my practice I see individual adults as well as children and families. The essential elements of therapy are compassion and deep understanding. As your therapist, my intention is to meet you where you are and go with you on your journey. My hope is that you will feel safe to express all of what you're feeling, that we can explore these feelings with compassion, and discover what can be understood. I will use my knowledge, training, and all that I've learned from my patients to help you negotiate the crossroads and crisis points in your life.

Working with individuals and families is a collaborative process. I hope to use my many clinical experiences to help guide clients through a path toward more satisfaction in life. Therapy is not a process of simple "change," but rather a process of finding and developing aspects of satisfaction in careers, families, leisure, and relationships that likely exist when we weed through the days' challenges. Through my years as a clinician, I know how to challenge that process. Through my years of teaching, I know when I can simply step aside and admire the strengths that each of us have inside.

I assist athletes and high performers in undoing the stressors, traumas, past pains causing mental illness symptoms like depression, performance anxiety, apathy, insomnia and a performance decline. I use Alpha Imprinting technique to allow for athletes to reset their nervous system from past hurts, pains, injuries, traumas and stressors so they can regain and expand on their peak performance abilities. Alpha Imprinting also desensitizes your nervous system on the sensory or unconscious level from any potential of worst-case scenarios in life and in sports so you can maintain flow "alpha" brain wave state while performing.

You experience life in deep and meaningful ways, but often feel overwhelmed, out of place, and painfully alone. You have intense passions and interests that many don’t seem to share. You've been gaslighted into believing you're "over-thinking" or "too sensitive" when you've shared powerful truths and questioned the status quo. You often doubt yourself, may silence your voice out of shame and fear, and spend extraordinary energy trying to fit in. You may have felt misunderstood and dismissed by other providers, or have been labeled with all sorts of conditions that never seemed to get to the root of your experience.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
