I have spent most of my education and training working with anxiety, depression, disordered eating/ eating disorders, and body image struggles.
I thought it was just me. This is the statement I hear frequently. I am here to help you realize that you are unique and the challenges you face are yours AND you do not have to face them alone. Too often our fears, our shame, our uncertainty hold us back from healing and asking for help. There is no struggle too big or too small to tackle alone. We are all perfectly imperfect and my goal is to help you embrace the parts of you that you would rather keep tucked away, heal from the stories you do not dare share with anyone, and use your life to create something beautiful.

I have worked in the West Texas community for 28 years helping young adults discover their identity and empower them to be their true authentic self. Working with young people as they embark on the journey into Higher Education has been a fulfilling process. Encouragement and empowerment help them go the distance and find success. I treat every client/student as an individual. Working with them to attain their goals and to find their power within. I also have over 15 years working in the field specializing in substance use disorders and eating disorders.

My ideal client is an adolescent or young adult who is struggling with anxiety, depression, and trauma. I also collaborate with clients who have eating disorders or struggle with body image. I offer psychotherapy in Texas through Zoom. Or I see clients in Lubbock in person. I aim to exceed client's expectations for a full and productive life. My personal approach is to practice radically open acceptance of my client through validation, while also expecting change and personal growth. This is particularly important for individuals who have intense emotions with ineffective coping skills.

If you or your family are struggling with issues like substance abuse, addiction, eating disorders, or relationship conflicts (infidelity, communication problems, etc.), therapy can be a great way to deal with those struggles. Most people struggle without support for longer than is helpful. People have the innate skills to cope and bounce back from their struggles. My goal as a therapist is to provide a non-judgmental space for you to identify and grow the tools to work on those struggles.

My areas of expertise, however, include depression, eating disorders/body image, relationship/marital concerns, infertility and pregnancy-related issues, and women's concerns.
Are you having problems in your most important relationships? Are you feeling down, tired, and unmotivated? Do seemingly small things send you over the edge? Are you struggling with communicating your feelings? Has it been difficult for you to adjust to a major life change, such as being a college student or new parent? Are you struggling to come to terms with an infertility diagnosis? Are you finding yourself coping through obsessions with food, weight, and your body image? Do you want to learn new ways of managing life?

I choose to focus my specialized training towards issues of self esteem, body image, eating disorders, and trauma.
I believe the most important factor in counseling success is the relationship between therapist and client. I want my clients to feel safe, comforted, and challenged in our work. I believe laughter is a precious tool in healing and feel each client should be met where they are at. You will often find me in my office sipping coffee with my adult clients, sculpting pieces of art with adolescents, or playing in the floor with children.

Eating disorders impact all aspects of an individual's life, and therefore, must be addressed in an integrative, holistic manner.
Often the issues that bring a person to my practice are depression, anxiety, or traumatic events. Some struggle with eating disorders or other behaviors that control their lives. When in the midst of these issues, a person often feels helpless to change course. Reaching out for help from a trained professional is a courageous first step, a step that can change the course of your life. If you are the type of person that desires to take that first step and is willing to change what is not working for you, we will likely work well together.

Sometimes our expectations don’t meet the reality of our life circumstances. Whether you are an exhausted mom trying to find your peace amidst chaos, a young adult confused about your future, or simply struggling in the daily grind of responsibilities, you may feel like you’re alone trying to navigate it all. Life seems to be catching up with you and each day you are spending more and more time pursuing things that take you away from who you are deep inside and who you always hoped to be. I am here to support you and listen. Together, we will work to get to the root of your struggles and find new ways to cope and move forward.

Healing comes from an intentional choice and giving yourself permission to take that choice. Seeking help is the first, and bravest, choice we can make. I would love to be part of this new healing journey you will embark on. When a client steps into my office I want them to have access to the journey that is within them. A place for a child to explore a world using toys and play for words, for teens to come, kick their feet up, and become the author of their own story, and for adults to create a healing narrative that is one of laughter, expression, and adventure.

In a world where so many feel alone in their suffering, I do my best to offer a safe space of acceptance. Research shows that processing feelings and events works best when processed interpersonally. Therapy is a worthy investment. When people invest in themselves emotionally and psychologically, they tend to reap the rewards of improved mood, healthier relationships, better overall health, and more occupational/creative success.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
