I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders.
If you are struggling with an eating disorder, I can help! I know the isolation, denial, justifications and struggles that make recovery difficult. I aim to create a space individually and with peers where you can experiment with recovery and see if it is better than your eating disorder. Eating disorders thrive in isolation, so peer support and building a recovery community is a large part of my treatment model. If you are at the place where you want to try something different, then let's work together! I use both harm-reduction and hold full recovery is possible if that is what is important to you. I regularly research treatments

I specialize in disordered eating, body-focused concerns, anxiety disorders, complex trauma, and identity exploration (i.e. gender, sexuality, neurodivergence, etc). I work from a trauma-informed lens, with a holistic and person-centered approach. I aim to create an accepting and affirming space that encourages personal reflection, growth, and self-empowerment through curiosity and compassion. I strongly believe that the mind and body work symbiotically, and that when we become more attuned to our bodies, there is vast potential for new insight and a deeper connection to our innate Self.

Life and living only exist in the present moment. Our untrained mind often causes us suffering when it dwells on past experiences, or future fears, clouding this moment where living actually occures. Depression, anxiety, our beliefs about our selves and others, all stem from these unnecessary thoughts and their related emotions. Our mind must come to realize that it is the cause of its own unhappiness. Then whatever we experience in life is no longer overwhelming. I have an appreciation and grounding in western oriented psychodynamics enriched with an eastern psychological and Spiritual perspective. Please visit my website: kennethandert.com

My orientation to counseling, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy is essentially a strengths perspective with a solution focus. The strengths perspective acknowledges all the strengths, resources and instinctual imperatives within an individual that have helped the individual get to the present moment. The strengths perspective helps me scan for the resources needed to resolve or modfy the treatment concern.

Most of us grew up learning who we were somehow wasn't quite okay. To cope and survive, we adopted a false self to gain the approval of others and minimize the pain we were in. Healing is the process of recovering the true self, so we can begin to live authentically and thrive. As you become aware of and reclaim the parts of yourself that you have repressed, numbed or disowned, you are able to move toward a deeper sense of self-love, awareness, personal empowerment, ease and integrity--internally, and in your relationships with others.

Since you are reading this profile, you are likely feeling a need for change. Fortunately, it is unnecessary to live life with fear, confusion, or loneliness. Just because you can't see how to get there doesn't mean it can't be done. I would be honored to walk this path of healing with you. Borrow from my hope and experience that things CAN be different. Whatever block you may be experiencing is simply a signal that your body and mind wants to heal. Together we can interpret those signals and create a healing dialogue.

The decision to enter into therapy can be scary, but can also be life changing. Deciding to take action after the thought occurs is possibly the most difficult and courageous thing a person can do. By reading this, you are already taking one step toward putting your thoughts into action. At this point, it is important to find a therapist who can meet your specific needs and someone you feel comfortable with.

I AM NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. I am a psychotherapist, licensed as a clinical social worker, certified as an alcohol and drug counselor and TRE® provider, drawing on over 25 years of experience. My primary foundational belief is that our mind and body operate as one organism, which contains its own healing potential. I use evidence-based approaches (EMDR, TRE, IFS) to assist clients in the natural healing process that includes moving to a state of regulation in the nervous system and accessing the wisdom that already exists in a person’s brain chemistry and somatic experience.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
