I believe that a person's ability to change or grow or adapt to difficult situations is present inside them. Depression, anxiety and poor coping strategies can get in the way. My job as your therapist is to help you build your self esteem and belief in yourself and increase your sense of optimism and control over your life. With new insights, your ability to take action will increase.

There can be many reasons to consider beginning therapy. We seem to live in a time of increased isolation and alienation, dissatisfaction and unrest. Talk therapy provides a unique space for connection, reflection, and understanding. It can help with overcoming internal and external obstacles, leading to a higher quality of life and relationships. I have experience working with people who have depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, addiction, fears, and a range of mental health challenges. By gaining a deeper understanding of your issues and yourself, we can find relief and a way forward.

It takes courage to reach out for support and begin a healing journey. I believe that the therapeutic relationship can be a source of that healing. I put a lot of emphasis on creating an atmosphere of respect, caring and safety. We will collaborate to understand and help the parts in you that stand in your way to feeling satisfied and happy. My particular areas of experience and interest are: coping with the aftermath of traumatic and painful experiences, life transitions, women's issues, relationships, complicated grief, anxiety, stage fright and creative blocks, depression, medical diagnoses and pain issues, multiculturalism.

Therapy can be an important aid in managing transitions, stresses, and crises. It can also provide a safe and supportive context to address longstanding struggles with depression, anxiety, or other concerns. I am a psychodynamically trained therapist who also utilizes cognitive behavioral and relational approaches. My clients describe me as attentive, supportive, and non judgemental. I view therapy as a collaboration between myself with my professional skills and training, and you with your knowledge of yourself and your desire for support and change. I am an authentic, active therapist who approaches therapy gently and directly.

I am an independently licensed social worker deeply committed to helping individuals and couples navigate issues that they feel are impeding their ability to live as the best, most authentic version of themselves. Over the past five years, I have worked with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, gender/identity issues, OCD, relationship difficulties, self esteem and many others. I strongly believe that therapy can only be effective if it is rooted in the philosophy of unconditional positive regard, and I believe that this is reflected in my open, candid and profoundly non-judgmental style.

Is your life out of balance? Would you like to be at peace with yourself and more connected with others? Are conflicting emotions and thoughts leading to unskillful behaviors? Taking a look at difficult patterns takes courage, and this courage deserves compassion. An understanding and skillful exploration of choices and motivators can clear the way for powerful changes that were previously unreachable.

Distress, discomfort, and change are often behind life's most challenging moments. However, with support, these moments can serve as catalysts for significant growth. I work with young adults, adults, and adolescents who are dealing with a variety of stressors, including symptoms of anxiety and depression, life transitions, family conflict, relationship issues, and identity exploration. I partner with clients to become curious about the patterns that may be appearing in their lives, discover and implement new coping strategies, and move forward with greater intention.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
