I have experience in a variety of areas including eating disorders, mood disorders, spirituality, life transitions, addictions, grief, trauma, stress, and relationship issues.
There are a lot of beautiful things in this world, but there is nothing I have encountered more beautiful and complex than human beings. There is so much depth, mystery, beauty, pain, and meaning in each person's story. I became a therapist because of my longing to hear people's stories and meet them exactly where they are. My greatest passion is caring for people through empathy, understanding, listening, and interceding into life's painful moments. I am committed to offering my clients acceptance, compassion, and unconditional positive regard in the midst of struggle.

My primary areas of interest include body image issues and eating disorders, body-focused repetitive behaviors, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, faith exploration, and navigating life transitions.
The culture we live in today bombards us with messages that tell us who we should be, how we should look, and what we should do. My goal is to help you develop a stronger sense of self and experience the freedom that comes from living from that foundation. I primarily utilize a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Narrative Therapy approach to challenge unhealthy beliefs and help you view you struggles as something that does not define you as a person.

In addition to a specialty in couples therapy using Emotionally-Focused Couples therapy (EFT), I specialize in trauma and eating disorders.
My passion is helping individuals and couples develop the tools to thrive. So often, we feel pressure to shrink ourselves to fit into external expectations. Therapy is a place to break free from those expectations and explore all aspects of yourself. We focus on how your past and present experiences impact your emotional wellness. By drawing connections between your emotions, thoughts, and experiences, one can learn how they impact your life and move towards healing and a meaningful life. Specific to couples therapy, I enjoy helping couples discover the underlying emotions driving discomfort and disconnection, leading to change.

I specialize in working with adults and adolescents who struggle with body image distress, disordered eating, and substance abuse/misuse. Individuals who suffer from disordered eating and addiction tend to also experience high levels of shame, self-criticism, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, and history of trauma which all perpetuate the illness. Addiction and eating disorders are not disorders of lacking control, but disorders of unmet needs.

I work in the treatment of eating disorders and addiction and how they can intersect.
I see life as a story, and we hold the pens to our next steps. Some chapters of our stories are wonderful, some are difficult, and all of them combine to make us who we are. I believe that everyone has much to tell, and I am passionate about helping people live the lives they desire while holding space for mystery and wonder as each person’s path unfolds. I often use Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) , Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Existential approaches in session, and believe in addressing wellness holistically.

I also have 6 years experiance treating adolecent and adult eating disorders.
I believe that one of the most important components to good therapy is a safe, attuned environment where you can receive strategic support in hearing your own voice. Often, we dismiss our voice or intuition. Therapy can be a place to allow our true emotions to be expressed, enabling us to hear what we may not be listening to in our everyday life. Together, we will uncover the often unspoken and align with your true values. My approach to counseling is collaborative and strengths-based.

I have 6 years of experience working with children and adolescents with eating disorders.
Therapy is your opportunity to discover and uncover the best things about yourself, while facing the things that feel like they're getting in the way. I’d like to think of myself as your guide through self-compassion, acceptance, and a better relationship with your body. I support individuals and their families who feel suffocated by their inner critic, anxiety, overwhelm, poor body image, depression, doubt, and fear. Through the use of IFS, ACT, CBT, DBT, and deep self-compassion work, I support adolescents and young adults in becoming their truest, most authentic selves.

I specialize in working with eating disorders, body image distress, low self esteem, and anxiety, and the ways in which those experiences can isolate us from each other, our environments, and ourselves.
Are you looking for freedom to show up differently in your relationship with yourself, including your relationship with food, your body, and the way you relate to the natural world? Hello! I'm Sara (she/her). I can help you reconnect with your needs, break free from your behaviors, and meet yourself with more compassion as you journey home to your authentic self. By gaining a deeper understanding of who you are, we will begin to help you move from a place of connection and desire, rather than a place of fear. Together we will uncover the patterns that keep you stuck, learning the old story to make space for a new one to unfold.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
