I am experienced in working with individuals and teens and specialize in anxiety, life transitions, self-esteem, depression, body image/eating disorders, and women's issues.
Therapy is a deeply personal and transformative process. It can oftentimes feel overwhelming yet empowering. Taking steps toward your healing takes courage, and I am here to honor your process. My gentle and empathic approach will help to create a safe and non-judgmental space as we work to explore the root of your pain. My practice is centered on teaching clients how to transform pain into internal sources of empowerment through a mind-body approach. Using a careful balance between talk therapy and experiential techniques in session allows for my clients to have deeper transformations and healing.

I work with teens and adults and am skilled in working with those struggling with addiction, OCD, eating disorders, perfectionism, and trauma.
Let’s be honest-therapy is uncomfortable! There’s no getting around that squirmy “I can’t believe I have to tell this stranger my problems” feeling. The only way to make progress is to move through those feelings. I am here to be by your side and guide you through the numerous emotions that come up in session. I admire my clients for their ability to face the challenges of therapy with veracity, strength, and sometimes humor. I’m here to make the therapy process marginally less uncomfortable by providing a safe, non-judgmental space.

If we all only have one life to live, why stick with habitual ways of coping that hinder your ability to live fully? I empower individuals with anxiety, trauma, and eating disorders to free themselves from limiting beliefs and behaviors, and live with strength, flexibility, and purpose.
You can be the author of your own story! Sometimes it may seem as though life hands you a deck of cards and you are stuck with whatever hand you are dealt. You struggle to cope with overwhelming thoughts, feelings, or behaviors due to past experiences. You do your best to find ways to get by. Some of these coping styles can be helpful, while others can be less helpful and may lead to struggles with everyday living. Through understanding how your story is related to your present challenges, you can develop a sense of agency to edit your story and make changes in your life.

I specialize in working with survivors of trauma, eating disorders, and athletes of most ages. What helps people deeply heal are brain-based interventions that understand the nature of our nervous system and how people heal, whether that be from toxic stress, attention and concentration problems, mood, or anxiety. As such, I have dedicated my practice to learning these interventions and how to apply them. I take this same lens when working with athletes, whether that's to recover from an injury, treat a mental disorder, or learn to consistently perform optimally. I have experience treating ages as young as 6 through the lifespan.

I specialize in working with adults and adolescents who struggle with body image distress, disordered eating, and substance abuse/misuse. Individuals who suffer from disordered eating and addiction tend to also experience high levels of shame, self-criticism, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, and history of trauma which all perpetuate the illness. Addiction and eating disorders are not disorders of lacking control, but disorders of unmet needs.

I have experience working in attachment disorders, trauma, and eating disorders through the Arizona Trauma Institute.
I strive to serve the community around me and advocate for those who are in need. I focus on psychotherapeutic models to aid individuals in understanding the role their brain plays in treatment. Educating individuals about brain structure, function, development, and explaining how neurobiology can be applied to individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, and other disorders. Interpersonal neurobiology of human development aids us to understand that structure & function of the mind & brain are shaped by our experiences especially involving emotional relationships.

I use integrative, holistic and evidence-based practices to help those struggling with eating disorders, disordered eating, and trauma. I focus on the integration of somatic, or body-centered therapies to help someone heal both in their mind, and in their body. My hope is to help my clients experience change from the inside out. I also believe in facilitating a culturally sensitive space that rejects assumed beliefs about someone based on their size, shape, gender, race or ethnicity.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
