I have worked in all levels of eating disorder care (residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, colleges) to help those suffering from Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorder.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist who as a generalist works with a variety of presenting problems and enjoys working with different populations. I have extensive experience working with women, men, adolescents, and children with eating disorders and OCD. It is critical to individually tailor treatment to each client's needs. I utilize relational, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, values based therapies in my practice. I have experience working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. I have a collaborative approach where therapist and client work as a team to better understand the problem and work towards healing and emotional health.

My varied experience over the past years has given a strong background in providing services to people struggling with severe mental illness, personality disorders, developmental disabilities, substance use issues, eating disorders and general difficulties with life transitions.
The Therapist for People Who Don't Like Therapy... My biggest goal in therapy is to get you out of my office and back into your life! With that said, I have found that most people, at some point in their life, could benefit from some professional listening and feedback. Our friends and family are great sources of support, but are often too closely involved to provide the kind of unbiased perspective that we need to help us out of a rut or to enact the true change that we really desire.

Hi, my name is Jennifer Neito, LMFT. Do you ever ask yourself, “Why does life have to be so hard?” “What did I do to deserve this?”, “What’s wrong with me?” or “Why do I end up repeating the same patterns?” Internal questions like these can sometimes take the form of depression, anxiety, grief/loss, transition, eating disorders, or existential life crisis. If your goals are to develop new coping skills, create a new relationship with yourself and the people around you, understand yourself better, and break unhealthy patterns, I can help.

It can lead to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and can negatively affect your relationships.
Nothing is more difficult than relationships. And nothing means more to you. All of us are hard-wired to be in relationship, to care for and be cared for by others. But what do you do when differences lead to never-ending battles because you never get close to the real issues? Or when withdrawal leads to resentments that are never addressed at all. I would like to help you remember your strengths that brought you together in the first place, feel relief as you share what is important to you, and appreciate each other's differences, which may really be a strength.

I work with Individuals experiencing diff life adjustments, overwhelm, depression, anxiety, phobias and panic attacks, eating disorders, grief and loss.
I promote growth and healing through compassionate insight, reflection and strategic direction! Acquired Knowledge seems most beneficial when put to use to benefit ourselves or others, for as we serve and engage with others, we more readily discover our true selves. I subscribe to Emerson's notion; "Do the thing, and you will have the power" rather than give me the power and then I will act! I enjoy being a contributing factor to others growth and advancement and relish witnessing the blossoming of added confidence, enhanced self-esteem. and true growth!

I understand addiction, compulsion and obsession very well and can help you understand their function in your life and help you build the skills necessary to put them out of a job. I believe everything we do, we do in an effort to take care of ourselves even though the things we choose to do may harm us. I help you to find more direct, satisfying ways to meet your real needs.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
