I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, trauma, and struggles in relationships.
Are you living the way you were intended to? Or are there seen and unseen barriers blocking your full engagement in life?  Vulnerability to pain and struggle is inherent when we live authentically. It’s our entryway into full human citizenship. And in the acceptance of this struggle lies the birthplace of compassion, connection, authenticity, and joy.  In the space we share together, I want to join you in the quiet conversation you have at your core. A step at a time, we can leave behind the stories you inherited, and perhaps became complicit in, and claim more freedom for your truest self.

Hello and welcome to my profile. By now I would assume that you've read several profiles on the "Psychology Today" site and by this point they are probably all sounding astonishingly similar. That's got to be frustrating. I hope that the following information concerning my practice doesn't have the same effect. Let me be brief: I work with a multitude of issues and problems that relate to: couples, anxiety, depression and anger management. I also work with addictions including eating disorders. My approach can help you work through unconscious conflict (repeating patterns again and again without understanding why) as well as compulsive behaviors such as drinking, thought ruminating and habitual behaviors that are difficult to control.I can help you 'evolve' out of your particular problem. I am supportive and reality based while I can always find humor in the worst and the best of times. Together we can turn this all around and get you to where you want to be.

I use these approaches to create space for individuals with experiences of trauma including attachment or developmental trauma and for individuals struggling with eating disorders.
As humans we crave connection: to be known and deeply loved. But sometimes we may feel like there are parts of us that aren't acceptable or loveable. We may learn to be sensitive to other people's signals, discerning what we need to do so that they'll love and accept us. Sometimes, we get so good at it that we don't even realize we’re doing it anymore. In the safety of therapy, I invite you to explore your full human experience. We will shine a light on the hidden places that you may not have been allowed to explore. We’ll acknowledge the barriers you have faced along the way while empowering you to move toward your fullest self.

In addition to eating disorders and relationships, I treat trichotillomania (hair pulling), skin picking and insomnia.
Having trouble finding, maintaining a relationship? Do you struggle with emotional eating and body image/self-esteem? See me quoted in New York Post, "Is This The Most Dangerous Diet Ever?" by Doree Lewak. Are you pulling your hair out? Trouble sleeping? Feeling stuck, hopeless? I'll help you get what you want sooner, using a variety of techniques to overcome your problems. It may be scary to reach out for help, but it's so much better than continuing down the same unsatisfying path. I listen actively and respond immediately to your concerns with warmth, understanding, and practical suggestions.

I work with individuals who are interested in the mind-body connection and want to address eating disorders, psychosomatic symptoms, self-harm, etc.
It is not easy to find someone with whom to share your inner world. As a therapist, I seek to provide a secure holding space that can assist in containing those feelings, because I believe that having a judgement-free space to develop awareness is important to one’s mental health. In this process, I will help you explore all the different parts of yourself, even the ones that feel the most shameful or unwanted. This process allows you to gain a more dynamic sense of yourself by getting to know the parts that have been kept at a distance. I believe this work can help make the intolerable a bit more tolerable.

You may have found yourself here because something isn’t working anymore. Whether in your relationship, your job, or negative thoughts that you can’t seem to redirect, it may feel like your typical coping skills or support systems aren’t enough. That’s ok. Take a breath and know that untangling this right now is not something you have to do alone. In my practice, I work with adults navigating interpersonal relationships, career stress, self-esteem and personal growths. I have experience with eating disorders, substance abuse, and trauma, and a special interest in working with the unique struggles of creative and performing artists.

I have also undergone advanced training in psychoanalysis and in the treatment of eating disorders, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, and psychosis.
Psychotherapy provides a unique space through which a new relationship with oneself and others can be forged. Change in patterns of feeling and relating can be achieved through a process of exploration of and reflection on one's deeply held beliefs, convictions, and values, and past and present experiences. My approach is collaborative and informed by psychodynamic perspectives. I strive to facilitate meaning, understanding, and empowerment through close attention to the details of one's internal life and external context. Many of the individuals I work with enter psychotherapy to work through depression and anxiety related to struggles with identity, relationships, loss, trauma, and migration.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
