I approach therapeutic work with the understanding that we are all wired for connection: to understand and be understood. In many cases, these needs are met by our social circles and community: partners, family, friends.
But we live in increasingly disconnected times, and the complexity of our lives sometimes means that the people we'd ideally turn to are the same ones we need support in understanding, loving, and living with. Or, when you're wrestling with questions of self, there could be any number of reasons you'd rather not share your process with those close to you - but it's also too much for an acquaintance.
The way I see it, that's where a good therapist comes in. I'm equal parts confidante and copilot; if therapy is a safe container for the nuanced, murky process of coming to better understand ourselves in relationship to our world and those in it, my role is to lean in enough to hear you, then step back enough to hold the mirror steady.
My experience has been that reaching shared intellectual understanding is the easy part: the meaningful parts of change happen in our guts. Sometimes we're graced with awareness of change as it's happening, but often it's more of a seismic shift. And, of course, not everyone grows the same way.
