My passion is working with individuals with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring substance use concerns along with an array of mental health disorders. I have a specific passion working with those who have experienced trauma or have been diagnosed/have concerns related to a personality disorder. I have worked with individuals with both substance and sexual addictions and find great passion in being able to work with individuals to help them implement changes and shape their lives towards a life worth enjoying.

TaNesha has been providing therapeutic services for the Twin Cities area for children, adolescents and families for the last sixteen years. She has worked specifically with disenfranchised minority communities and has taken extensive multicultural training to support her work. As an African American female, TaNesha serves as both knowledgeable and an in-demand resource in that specific population. Using a holistic approach to therapy with a framework centered on reality(choice) based therapy, TaNesha looks at all aspects of a person’s life in order to help them identify areas of change.

My approach to therapy is relational, attachment focused, systems based, and trauma informed as I believe how we experience the world is through an eclectic lens of our relational and developmental histories, genetic and biological make-up, experiences with others, and the communities in which we live. I believe that sometimes healing is best ignited through connection, support, and exploration. I practice primarily with adult individuals, families, and couples navigating the effects of stress, PTSD/trauma, identity exploration and self-esteem, life transitions, oppression, and dual-diagnosis.

I believe in a holistic approach to therapy—in other words, treating the whole person rather than fragmenting someone into parts. This approach involves meeting my clients where they’re at, focusing on the therapeutic relationship, and working together to create realistic goals. I am empathetic, direct, and keep it real while maintaining compassion. Most importantly, I believe that therapy can (and should) be fun! I pride myself in creating a therapeutic space where my clients can work on the hard stuff, but also take space to laugh and just be human.

She attended Adler Graduate School where she studied co-occurring disorders and completed her master’s degree in Adlerian Counseling and Psychotherapy. She is dually trained to provide counseling for both substance use and mental health disorders. She provides personalized care, equipping clients with the courage and skills to meet their goals.

Joan has worked with individuals of all ages, families and couples. She is trained in Adlerian Psychotherapy and has extensive experience in working individuals with addictions, mood disorders, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, grief and loss, as well as, individuals with serious and persistent mental illnesses. Joan’s approach combines therapy focused on change in the “now”, trauma-informed, life coaching, and explored patterns of behavior developed in early experiences.

I am a feminist therapist licensed in the state of Minnesota to treat co-occurring disorders - that’s just a way of saying I’m trained in working with folks that struggle with more than one issue at a time. Think things like anxiety and alcohol abuse, trauma and depression, stress management and ADHD, and so on… I believe mental health diagnoses can be helpful in giving us a starting point for evidence based ways to improve our mental wellness, but they are also labels rooted in and created by classically oppressive systems, so diagnosis is not a primary focus of sessions.

I strongly believe in taking a strengths-based, resilience approach, and in looking for the positive. I am an experienced, licensed mental health therapist, and a chemical dependency counselor. I work with families who have experienced a variety of traumas in my work at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Much of the that job involves counseling parents who have lost an infant or child, or who have a child with chronic health problems, or whose child has a life threatening condition. In addition, couples who try to have another child after a loss have specific needs. When interventions are available to address the trauma of child illness or death right away, we can sometimes reduce the severity of the struggles with their trauma.

I believe that what we are dealing with is not who we are. Challenges with substance use, mental health symptoms, relationships, or whatever else you are facing do not define you. Learning how to see beyond these things to the full and complete person you are can be both difficult and healing. I believe that my role as a therapist is to help clients start that process in a supportive and non-judgmental way.
