Especially for some of the most successful among us, we can hold ourselves to the highest standards of performance in all areas. Sometimes we may feel that we're supposed to have all the answers to the challenges life throws our way, even when that isn’t always possible. An achievement focus can come at the expense of other areas of our lives. I see therapy as a collaborative experience. I work with individuals and couples to help unlock what holds them back to gain an understanding of how our histories shape our present, while building a foundation of skills in the here-in-now to promote healing and a future that is self-defined.

Allow me to commend you for taking a step that can require both courage and vulnerability. I would consider it an honor to walk alongside you on a meaningful path of self discovery which includes improving the most important relationship you will ever have — the one you have with yourself. Although life can be fraught with challenges, they do not have to define you. Pain in life is inevitable, suffering is optional; let me help you move away from any suffering.

As a licensed and board certified clinician, I find that all aspects of experiences impact my clients as they do myself. My background in psychology and social work give me a unique perspective. I have worked as an educator in the public schools, provided services at a tier 3 hospital and continue to work in the non-profit sector. Each experience enhances my expertise in addressing serious issues that may be presented. Couples counseling, anger management, drug and substance abuse are some of the main areas that are addressed. We look for the underlying causes primarily Depression, Anxiety and mental health concerns.

I have always had a strong passion to support others along their journey of life. As we know, this often comes with struggle along with beauty. My goal is to create a safe and comfortable environment for my clients to open up and process their deepest pain and personal experiences that impact who they grow to become. Our relationship with ourselves is the most important one we will ever have, and I emphasize the importance of self-worth, perceptions on oneself and others around them, and bringing understanding to unfortunate life events. I have confidence that every person is capable of overcoming whatever is thrown their way.

While everyone’s journey through life is unique, we ultimately all want the same thing…We ALL want to be happy. Unfortunately, happiness doesn't always come easily. Our journey is full of challenges that we have to overcome in order to get back to being happy. We experience sadness and loss. We fall completely in love only to suffer heart break. Some of us go through traumatic events such as combat or a devastating accident. These situations and many more cause us to develop feelings of fear, sadness and frustration which we do our best to manage, but typically do so in an unhealthy and maladapted way.

The most therapeutic element in psychotherapy is the relationship between us. You invite me into your interior self which is a special, even sacred, place hiring me as a guide during this phase of your life's journey. Ultimately, our goal is to do things better by initiating new ways of being or putting aside some of the old. Therapy is not escape; it is not blame. It is about better facing the challenges of life, helping ourselves find our way through where we now are, and sometimes it's also about finding our way back to ourselves.

Do you ever feel like something is missing? Like there is a void that nothing seems to fill? Ever feel bound or trapped by the failures of your past? The regrets of your mistakes? The pressure and weight of depression, anxiety, family strain, and stress ever wear you down and wear you out? Well I believe there is an answer and it is found in wholeness! It is found in the truth of who you are! The unity of the family system. The healing from the past. The acceptance of the present. The hope of the future.

Clients bring different issues and needs to therapy: addictions, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and the list goes on. I believe that they are seeking counseling/therapy because they want to fix, change, and overcome things. That's where I come into play. I may not have all the answers, tools, and steps to change everything, but I know how to work with the clients as they process their needs.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
