You’re struggling with past painful experiences impacting your current relationships & preventing you from living life on your terms. Past therapists with traditional, rigid & impersonal approaches were not helpful for you; leaving you feeling that nothing will ever help or change. I believe healing is possible & therapy incorporating an understanding of oppressive systems we navigate can provide a space to heal. Challenging internal messaging rooted in trauma & systems of oppression can help turn off the auto-pilot or get off the merry-go-round to live a life of meaningful choice, authenticity, connection, belonging & joy.

Is the voice in your head always putting you down, telling you that you're not good enough? Are you anxious, on alert, anticipating danger? Do you feel checked out, only half there going through motions? Somedays do you feel like you're about to explode and things feel like too much? Or the opposite, you'd like stay in bed and just not deal? Trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, grief, and change can really weigh on us making it so difficult to enjoy life, come back to center during challenges, or even feel awake to our lives and relationships. For those of us from marginalized identities, the difficulty can be amplified even more.

You feel invisible, worn down, ashamed. You feel like if you had just grown up in a different environment, you wouldn’t feel hurt, confused, or angry. You might feel like an outsider, wanting to be yourself but don’t know how to build confidence or connection with others while doing so. You might worry about scaring people or not getting what you need because you can’t do it yourself. You feel like if you just knew how to regulate yourself better, you wouldn’t drink or use. Those struggles are real and I want to work with you on building the life you want and deserve.

Nathan Daly (they/them/theirs) cannot and will not “fix” you because you are not broken and because all gains made in the therapeutic relationship are a result of your willingness to come to know yourself. Theories and modalities central to Nathan's practice include Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness and Buddhist contemplation practices, feminist theory, family systems, and attachment theory. Nathan's training, passion and personal style tend to be most effective in working with adult survivors of childhood abuse (e.g., sexual, psychological, physical and spiritual) in an individual, couples and family capacity.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
