My philosophy is that every person has the potential to meet their goals and live a fulfilling life. It is my goal to help people strengthen their relationships with themselves and others, increase natural strengths and improve reactions to stress and challenge. The person most suited to my practice is one who is ready to commit to engaging in the work necessary for greater self-awareness and change. I see people with a variety of conditions including depression, anxiety and grief.

Have you ever just wanted to sit down to off-load something that’s been eating away at you for too long? Recognizing the need for help and seeking professional therapy is a sign of strength and determination to live a productive and meaningful life. As a part of living our lives, we may encounter situations that are difficult to manage alone. Some seek support due to a situational crisis. Others seek treatment as a necessary aspect of managing a medical disorder, commonly known as a mental illness. Whether you are experiencing a life adjustment or more complex medical conditions, it is a well known fact that therapy helps.

Less than 16% of therapists in Texas are male, which may very well be why so many men don’t go to therapy. I specialize in men’s issues including fatherhood, life transitions and stigma. Additionally, families often need support when raising their children. I work with families and children through difficult transitional times, such as grief, school anxiety, college transitions, and family communication.

I am licensed in TX and NV. My ideal client would be one that is seeking help in dealing with issues of grief and depression. This client would present with symptoms of depression secondary to a recent loss (usually death of a loved one). The client is provided a safe place to vent their emotions and provided guidance in identifying the stages of grief and loss as well as guidance on how to handle their emotions while still being a productive member of society in their respective stage of life. The client would be open to any advice or skills that I would want to bestow on them, that will help them overcome these issues.

I have had a 30-year career of counseling those in need with mental health and substance abuse issues. I have a unique approach to developing a trusting relationship that is meant to let the client steer me to what is important or missing in their life. It is part of the human condition for us to feel lost at times which facilitates the need for an experienced clinician to assist them in finding ways to cope with issues they are experiencing.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
