As a Jungian analyst, I encourage patients to cultivate a meaningful relationship with their inner life — including dreams, imagination, and the symbolic dimensions of experience. This process helps deepen self-awareness and allows the work of therapy to extend beyond the consulting room into everyday life. People come because of their interest in dreamwork and other ways of developing a relationship to the unconscious.
Many of you have tried problem-solving therapies such as CBT but are looking for a fuller engagement. I follow in the footsteps of Jung because he affirmed the importance of relating to the entirety of ourselves. Symptoms and problems demand we find their meaning; they are messages from the unconscious that ask us to adjust our conscious attitude.
Confronting ourselves is not easy, but necessary if we are to grow. Over many years I have learned that an empathic connection forms the best basis for the exploration of the psyche.
