I am a physician offering MAT, Medication-Assisted-Treatment for addiction to opioids and alcohol. These meds can help people stay off heroin, opioids, and alcohol - offering time to address the root of the problems, pains and sufferings that people are escaping from. Many times people who use drugs and alcohol have had difficult experiences at home growing up. With decent therapy they can rebuild their inner strength and become functioning adults again without needing alcohol and drugs as crutches. They can learn to love themselves the way they are, and move on in life.
I combine medications with a 3rd Generation Behavioral Therapy called ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which emphasizes mindfulness, acceptance of our experiences such as anxiety and fear, releasing ourselves from labels and unnecessary rules, and then taking strong, valued actions toward who and what is really important to us.
I try to make it clear that I'm not afraid to be human, and you shouldn't be afraid to be human either. If you make a mistake, or slip, it's best to be honest, so fixing it becomes part of our work and we can move on.
