I strongly believe that all humans can reach an optimum state of health. An essential part of achieving this often involves addressing limiting habitual patterns of behavior or belief systems as well as learning skills to optimize healthy relationships. I seek to provide a safe and non-judgmental environment in which clients can identify their own answers and achieve tangible results. This can occur both in individual sessions as well as with the collaboration of family members. My practice has lead me to work with youth, young adults, adults, and families facing some very challenging life situations and internal struggles.

When you are moving in the right direction, the Universe cooperates. Most of us have set set goals or developed expectations for how we want to live our lives, but sometimes we get stuck along the way. We tend to think that we can sort out these complications on our own or by talking to a close friend. Therapy is an opportunity to tell your story to a professional asking the right questions, providing unbiased perspectives, or shining light on a dark place. I encourage clients to focus on the issues keeping them from experiencing contentment and satisfaction in life.

I will have a few daytime openings coming up in January. Research shows the primary agent for positive change in counseling is the quality of the therapeutic relationship. I know sitting down with a relative stranger to discuss life concerns can be unsettling. My ability to establish a genuine connection with my clients helps them to feel at ease while engaging in therapy. Coupling empathy, creativity, and compassion, with evidenced-based practice, I address a variety of mental health issues including adjustment issues/life transitions, anxiety and depression, PTSD, shame, adolescent and women's issues.

Individual adults (18+) who are committed to self exploration, challenging past patterns, and growth tend to enjoy my approach. My practice focuses on adults with symptoms of depression and/or anxiety that may stem from: lack of identity development (who am I?); adjusting to life changes–such as, going to college, career challenges, coming out, partnering/divorce, death of a loved one, mid-life crisis, retirement, empty nest; relationship conflicts–work or personal; past trauma; poor attachment to childhood caregivers; or having a marginalized identity (such as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, women, immigrants).

My approach to therapy began with a passion for working with individuals affected by past trauma. Throughout my professional development, I have integrated a humanistic/existential approach to treatment, incorporated spirituality as appropriate, and discovered the effectiveness of applying a theoretical orientation based on client presentation rather than therapist preference. In my career I have been fortunate enough to train in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) which added a much-needed behavioral component to my approach, and I have found this treatment modality (as well as CBT) to be helpful for clients across the board.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
