Do you feel overwhelmed, disconnected, and insecure? Has your relationship been wounded or lost its spark? Are you feeling dissatisfied or stuck with some aspect of your life and not sure how to make a shift? Has becoming or being a parent turned your world upside down? Life is full of transitions and stressors and it’s hard to stay in tune with ourselves, our partners, and our family members as we grow, change, and deal with stress. Sometimes we all need a safe space to process, reconnect, and heal – to speak our pain, communicate what we need, and be supported as we tap back into love and connection.

For over 9 years, I’ve worked with people with addiction, domestic violence issues, substance use issues, interpersonal struggles, and childhood trauma as an outpatient counselor, in-home therapist, and mentor.
Anxiety, worry, the pandemic, and isolation affect us all. Through experience and knowledge, my therapeutic style will effectively address you as a human first and diagnosis last, if at all. I am a competent counselor, a twin, and a friendly face - all labels worn in my approach with pride. With these identifiers and years of experience, most clients find therapy with me rewarding and long-lasting. If you're looking for authentic, empathetic, and direct, let's set up a time to chat.

I have conducted the first empirical study of group therapy for adult sexual abuse survivors, evaluated programs for intimate partner violence and written a book on intergenerational cycles of trauma and violence.
My approach to psychotherapy is based on attachment theory which states that our first important relationships (namely, with our parents) influence how we relate to those closest to us now. As infants, we learn to do whatever is necessary, including distorting our thoughts and feelings, in order to maintain that connection. This early experience even affects brain development setting the stage for depression, anxiety and dysregulation. Fortunately, current relationships (including with a therapist) can provide a corrective experience. That is the beauty of psychotherapy - by understanding how our past affects our present we are better able to negotiate our future.

I am a licensed mental health therapist working in private practice. I provide individual therapy to adults. The population that I serve has experienced symptoms stemming from stress, depression, anxiety, PTSD/trauma , childhood issues , abuse, neglect, domestic violence and marital problems, among others. Such symptoms and experiences can change the course of life and create difficulties that impair one's ability to manage daily responsibilities. Problems in relationships and difficulty parenting a child can also be very overwhelming and create feelings of inadequacy.

As a former cult member, I help people and their families who have been "unduly influenced." I am committed to helping people reclaim their personal power. I wrote four books including Freedom of Mind, Combating Cult Mind Control, and The Cult of Trump. My online courses include Understanding Cults: A Foundational Course. I help people from all over the world who have found that mental health professionals unless they are specialized in treating cult members, are at best a waste of time and resources, and worse, do further harm. A large part of my practice is short term work with former members.

Psychotherapy is a good, honest, and interesting conversation amongst equals. It is a guided journey of self-awareness to reclaim our authenticity. We activate inner resources through storytelling, so to gain new perspectives about ourselves, and others. We are not mechanically determined by our past. Imagination opens creative alternatives reinforcing a sense of realistic hope. The goal is to achieve meaning, and purpose in all the spheres of our existence.

It's all too much. The never-ending responsibility to care for others at work and meeting your loved one's needs at home is a heavy weight to bear. As a high achiever, you've always been able to take on life's demands. But lately, you're trying to do it all while feeling completely overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with self-doubt, anxiety, and sometimes even feeling debilitated/frozen. At the end of the day, you're disappointed in yourself for being short with others, going through the motions with no real joy, and realizing that none of your own needs were met. You're mentally exhausted, frustrated, & need help getting off this carousel.

As a therapist, I work not as a "shrink" but an "enhancer," helping clients work through past problems, engage the challenges of the present, and move towards a more fulfilling future. I am client-focused rather than technique-focused because each client-therapist relationship is unique, and techniques should be employed selectively to optimize change and growth. That said, clients can expect that I will: 1) Act as a strong ally, adding emotional and intellectual energy to their efforts to change, 2) Provide insight and fresh perspective that takes them beyond their usual patterns of perceiving and responding to life circumstances.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
