My professional orientation is very eclectic. I combine a Jungian philosophy with CBT and DBT interventions with a client centered approach that involves a caring and insightful focus on self, others and community. My intention is to collaborate fully with each individual and to assist him or her in changing the trajectory of his or her life in a positive way. I view self discovery as an essential part of our unfolding experience together and value our time together. To become an agent of change in one's own life takes tremendous courage and strength; I can help facilitate this.

Counseling provides a safe place to explore beliefs, thoughts, emotions and patterns of behavior interfering with functioning and well being. Emphasis is solution focused to improve quality of life. Specific training over the last 13 years has included suicidal thoughts, self harm, adolescent and teen transitions, pregnancy, postpartum transitions and depression, chronic trauma/invalidation and its effect on the individual throughout the lifespan. CBT, DBT skills and developmental theory influence my interventions.

I have experience and great passion for helping those individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, fear, and the memories of past traumatic experiences that continue to have an affect on how they live their lives today. Many therapies can be successful but I believe it ultimately comes down to the relationship that develops between the client and therapist, and the amount of work and effort put into making change happen.

I provide holistic counseling for couples, adults, and families. My areas of focus include relationship issues, life transitions, gender and sexuality, conscious (positive) aging, living with mental and physical illness, trauma, grief and loss. Drawing on over 35 years in mental health and medical social work, I offer clients support and guidance dealing with the challenges and opportunities of life.

Couples/Families: Close relationships can be difficult. Top issues that bring couples into counseling include: Money, In-Laws, Parenting, Housework, Sex, and Emotional Intimacy. Relational issues left untreated often cause couples to live in "quiet desperation" or all-out warfare. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Rutberg-Self has specialized in child/adolescent testing, primarily for assessing learning and behavioral problems, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, autism, and complex mood disorders. These assessments are comprehensive in nature and involve intelligence, academic, personality, and neuropsychological batteries. Dr. Rutberg-Self also conducts classroom observations and consults with multiple parties, such as teachers, pediatricians, counselors, etc. These evaluations are often critical for generating the accommodations children and teens need in school, as par of IEP and 504 plans.

I am interested in the meanings that you make from your life experiences and the influence that these have on your perspectives of yourself, your relationships, and your future. I find that viewing problems as separate from personhood helps to lessen feelings of guilt and shame so that we can work together in a collaborative environment. My training in family systems theory informs my view of people in the context of their relationships, environment, and culture. I consider it a privilege to work with people to bring about the changes they desire in their lives and relationships.

When we struggle with depression, anxiety, pain from the past, or traumatic stress, our relationships struggle too. Often the pain experienced in relationships with our loved ones is what drives us to find relief and solutions from the disconnect and disruption we are in the midst of. We don't just want to feel better, we want to be better: Better to ourselves, better to those we love. Engaging in therapy and neurofeedback is about looking for the solutions that will enable us to move beyond the obstacles and into the connections we really desire.

My approach is person-centered, with hopes of being able to meet you where you are, with a therapeutic orientation that is intuitive in nature.

Angela Lujan, LMHC, CMHS, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Child Mental Health Specialist. Angela has worked over the last several years with children/teens/young adults and their families, helping navigate relational hardships and conflicts. Angela is particularly drawn to working with youth and adults who struggle with interpersonal relationships, bullying, self-image issues, anxiety, depression, self-harm, grief and loss, trauma, learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, concerns with school performance, and various other emotional and behavioral challenges.
