I am passionate about working with teens and adolescents as they navigate the stressors that come with growing up. This could present in a multitude of ways consisting of emotional regulation, exploring sexuality/identity, navigating transitions in school, conflicts with family and peers, high acuity depression or self-harm, or living through parents divorce/separation. Additionally, young adults exhibiting symptoms of PTSD and complex trauma who are ready to process and return to their life before the trauma are another sweet spot of mine.

Are you struggling to communicate with your co-parent? I have been helping divorced & remarried parents with "co-parenting" since 2003. My passion is for kids to have a whole and healthy life by empowering and helping divided parents raise them between mom's house and dad's house. This is a complex journey and one that I personally walk every day. I wrote a book, "Co-parenting Works! Helping Your Children Thrive After Divorce" (HarperCollins 2011) and it has been making an important difference with families all around the country. I believe the power of even one stable parent can make a difference for the children! There is HOPE!

I help women move forward and rebuild after divorce or difficult breakup, couples find clarity in their relationship, and families dealing with the aftermath of divorce. My passion is supporting clients as they navigate life’s toughest moments, as these life transitions can have you feeling all the things – overwhelmed, scared, sad, angry, and frustrated. Accepting and adjusting to these changes can be hard to handle on your own, so that's where I come in. Are you struggling with a life transition, perhaps facing a divorce or separation? If you have children, you may be wondering if they are going to be OK, especially if you do not feel like you are OK. Children are impacted emotionally by the same events that impact adults, but they process them differently. I have worked with a variety of clients- ranging from very young children to adults and couples. I have extensive training and experience in trauma - both childhood trauma and adult trauma. I am a certified Trauma therapist (CTT) and am certified in EMDR therapy.

I help stressed out, overwhelmed, worried counselors and other helping professionals. I know that as a great therapist you are passionate about your work, but at times, you might fail to take care of yourself; over time the client stories you hear may begin to impact your personal well being. While you are helping others, divorce, death and other disturbing things can happen to you, and you may have become disengaged and detached from your life, your family, and your clients. Who helps the helper?

My clinical focus include: couple and family therapy, divorce, mood disorders, anxiety, depression, religious trauma and abuse.
Taking care of yourself, your relationships, and your soul are some the most important things you can do. However, sometimes stress can pile up, relationships get strained, or unexpected losses leave an empty place in life. Sometimes even church can hurt. When these things happen it can get overwhelming resulting in many more questions than answers. It is a privilege for me to walk with people who are experiencing challenges and help them heal from wounds, solve problems and glean some redemptive meaning from the challenges they face.

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
