Counseling is not so much about addressing "dysfunction" as about having a rich and safe space to be heard, and helped. I tell teens (who believe that seeing a counselor means they're crazy), that I work with normal kids and normal problems. I believe that about all my clients. "Normal" problems are daunting when they appear as depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, divorce, difficulties with kids, and/or burnout. My belief is that every human difficulty makes sense, but sometimes they require a translator and guide. My intention is to provide the space that leads to wellbeing and fulfilling relationships.

Life is full of changes. We often struggle with changes at work, relationships, family, losses or financial hardship. How do we bounce back from disappointments, disasters, trauma and other adversities? Most of us benefit from connecting with others. Turning to others for support is a source of strength which builds resilience. Learning how to understand our own emotions and connecting with others is part of the journey of life. I am here to support you though this journey in a safe and confidential environment with many years of experience working with diverse populations.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist, I work with clients of all ages who need help and support in the areas of stress management, relationship discord, parenting, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, and adjustment to life transitions, such as divorce, the diagnosis of a serious illness, and empty nest.
To be heard and understood is one of our most basic, fundamental human needs. Losses, life transitions, relationships, and even extended periods of stress can cause us to feel confused, overwhelmed, and even hopeless. You are not alone if you have found yourself struggling in any of these areas. My primary goal is to welcome you into a safe and collaborative space where personal growth can be fostered, and hope can begin.

I have always found it fascinating that so much learning can arise from a simple conversation. I believe that as human beings we are constantly evolving and therefore, I thrive on learning from the professionals that surround me as well as my clients. It is the most humbling and rewarding experience to serve an individual that has courageously put their faith in me to guide them in their healing journey. I see growth not only in the client but also in myself because I believe human beings are meant to learn, evolve and grow from educating one another.

In the world of therapy, there are therapists like doctors and those who are more like surgeons. I am a therapeutic surgeon, meaning that we will go straight toward the dysfunction and replace it with something that works for you.

I believe the purpose of counseling is to give you a place to honor and express all of your feelings especially when events don't occur in your life as planned. I look forward to talking with you about how you are feeling, and as equally important, how you would like to feel. I counsel adults and couples.

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
