Trauma takes many forms; often in the guise of unprocessed grief and loss. Loss of employment, financial insecurity, divorce, separation, domestic violence and abuse; all must be mourned. We become stuck; often not understanding our own reactions to people, places and things. Our partners, children, colleagues and superiors can appear to feel unfairly entitled to what we have to offer. Our ability to tolerate distress is limited.

In addition to seeing children and parents for therapy, I have practiced as a child specialist in collaborative divorce.
As a psychotherapist, I help clients redefine how they live their lives. I am a licensed clinical social worker who sees children, adolescents and families as well as individual adults. By engaging in a series of conversations, I will help you to challenge the problematic assumptions and ways of being that prevent you from realizing the full potential of your life. I work from a colloborative stance that assumes you are the expert on your life. But my own expertise in helping people overcome emotional problems, troublesome habits and relationship roadblocks can help you create new solutions to old problems.

IN THE TIME OF COVID, WE ALL HAVE TO UP OUR CONNECTION GAME. Face it, you love your partner, they drive you crazy. And now that we’re around each other 24/7 and some of us with kids crawling all over us, we are not getting our needs met and we are hurting each in ways we are not proud of. Before it was an option to just let our old patterns kind of work. Not now! You are not alone! The whole world is experiencing this. What is essential now is for couples to upgrade. You won't have an 8 hour break (at work) to recover from what your partner just did. We need to actively practice COUPLES SKILLS THAT WORK. It's not optional now!

Clients often come to me when they’re having trouble balancing multiple identities or areas of their lives. You might feel overwhelmed, overworked, or confused about why you don't feel better. Maybe you’re struggling to manage relationships, feeling like you can't relax, or not being accepted as queer, trans, or non-monogamous by family or community. You might feel stuck in your head, and aren’t sure which way to turn to feel better. I have a passion for working with people who like using their big brains to solve big problems, live in liminal spaces, and who might be struggling to connect with others in the ways that they'd like.

Relationships take work, but sometimes we don't know what work needs to be done, or how to do it in a way that strengthens the connections between us. That's where I come in. Therapy is like an objective mirror that reflects thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Through this mirror, you can begin to see a clearer picture of your relationship, so much so, that eventually you can carry that image outside of the therapy room & be happy & confident in what you see. In my work, I provide a space for vulnerability & understanding that allows these connections to foster change. We'll collaborate to make a plan that fits your specific needs.

Welcome to my practice. I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
