There is no shame in asking for help, its actually a sign of courage to reach out, and make an effort to change. My specialties include; trauma, self-esteem, parenting, relationships, grief, death or divorce, fears and phobias, anger issues, sexual abuse, substance abuse, stress management. I teach interpersonal relationship skills, emotional regulation & distress tolerance skills. I also diagnose all mental health disorders based on DSMV.

To help you get to know me, I go by my nickname "Sam". I have over 30 years of experience working with individuals over the age of 14 and families. I specialize in helping families avoid and survive high conflict divorce. I coach parents about parental responsibility as part of divorce. I have a major area of interest working with individuals with Dissociative Disorders. I work with offenders of Domestic Violence. I enjoy working with adults who want to improve their quality of life through personal growth. I have experience working with the GLBTQ+ community. I have additional training working with Veterans of all services .

I am a Durango native, born and raised. Having lived here my whole life, I have deep roots in this community and understand the joys and struggles of living in a rural town. I have a passion for helping women, and young adults experiencing life transitions such as going to college or ending a long-term relationship, as well as, helping people heal and process traumatic events. I also help parents understand and improve their connection with their children or teens through parent coaching and am a registred Play Therapist.

I believe counseling can help everyone, whether you are struggling with something specific like depression, anxiety, or grief, or simply wanting to live a healthier life. It is my deepest honor to work and walk with my clients on their journey, especially in times of great need. I use many different techniques, each specific to the individual I am working with. I meet you where you are emotionally and help to get you where you want to be.

I work primarily with individual adults, ages 18+ who find themselves in need of extra support, whether due to sudden life changes or longer term issues.

Having been given the experience of raising children, long term marriage, career and family, life’s victories and losses have fortified, in me, a passion for this work. I enjoy helping individuals and couples to respond in beneficial ways to circumstances and experiences out of one's control and to empower the path, forward, toward personal dreams and values.

I realize that no two people are the same and as such tailor my therapy to meet the specific needs of my clients. When appropriate, I use specialized training in Clinical Art Therapy to provide additional avenues for the expression and depth work that deep healing requires. I interweave DBT, Psychodynamic Theory and depth work to meet clients where they’re at, provide experienced containment during strenuous treatment and guide them towards a greater life worth living. My practice specializes in treating adolescents, young adults, families and group therapy.

To do this, I utilize a client centered, integrated, and creative approach.

My role is to act as a guide toward discovering and developing resources to manage the complex issues occurring in life. We will explore strengths and develop skills for you to decrease discomfort and disturbances from trauma, grief, physical and sexual assault, anxiety, depression, disordered mood or thoughts. I will provide a space for compassion and empowerment to navigate a different path.

As a counselor and as a human, I believe deeply in the importance of coming as you are, however you are. And that this is the best place to begin. Each one of us comes with our mistakes and bruises, and our perfect fallibility. And these are moments to be met honestly and with heart. To say the least, I am passionate about supporting others in their own journeys of healing and self-discovery. My specialties include grief and loss including grief ritual, trauma and EMDR, anxiety/stress/depression, mindfulness/meditation/embodiment, and relational distress, personal growth, DBT and CBT.
