Having personally benefited from participation in psychoanalysis, I can say as a patient and a clinician that psychotherapy is transformational. Through the process of becoming more conscious and adopting a broader, deeper perspective of Self, events, and existence, we express our uniqueness. This is individuation; an interesting and exciting journey where new vistas of opportunity begin to open from within. Reassuringly, we already possess inside everything we need for change to occur.
My approach to psychotherapy is based upon the theoretical framework of Carl Jung. Jung’s model emphasizes the critical role awareness plays in bringing about change. Through reflection and dialogue in therapy, material that was unconscious is made conscious which in turn, facilitates the working through of issues and the healing of old wounds.
Carl Jung identified the center of psyche as the Self and it is the Self that drives the therapy, not the therapist. My job as a psychologist is to help clients access previously unconscious contents of the psyche, offer hypotheses and interpretations of the information they provide, and offer education about human dynamics when such might be useful.
