Drawing upon Motivational Interviewing, DBT, CBT, and creative and somatic engagement techniques, I help clients build new skills, problem-solve, and take meaningful steps outside of therapy.
At Sequoia, I work with young people ages 14 - 25 years old. I appreciate supporting those who want to: increase their self-worth; experience emotions without being overwhelmed by them; improve their relationships with their family, friends, or significant others; examine the relationship between past events and current patterns; make changes in their behaviors that are consistent with their goals and values; and/or navigate oppression with more self-respect and advocacy skills. I have supported people of many identities, including people who identify as queer, NB, trans, POC, and neurodiverse.

My approach draws from a variety of behavioral treatments supported by science, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
My goal for each of my clients is to help them build and sustain a life they want to live. This can seem like a daunting task, especially for the many of us who have struggled to make long-lasting changes in our mental health. As a clinical psychologist, I strive to help clients foster awareness of the underlying thoughts and behaviors that drive emotional suffering, and to help clients build a diverse repertoire of evidence-based skills for taking back control of these experiences.

I utilize skills from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy as core modalities in all of my work.
I offer a holistic, humanistic, and youth-centered approach to help young people who are impacted by mental and behavioral health concerns. I begin work with each youth by seeking to understand their personality and identities, their skills and challenges, the systems and environments they are embedded in, and the way mental health symptoms are impacting them.

I have been a therapist for 13 years and primarily use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) in addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and expressive methods (writing, art, and play) to engage clients and families.
As a child and family therapist I work with tweens, teens and young adults (11-25 yr. old) and caregivers. Being young can be fun and also sometimes stressful, confusing, and painful. I work with young people experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD, emotional dysregulation and distress, and relationship challenges. I also love to work with parents. As parents, whether our child is or is not willing to get therapeutic support, doing our own work to care effectively can have invaluable impact in our children's lives. I help parents to better understand their child, support regulation, and model effective skills.

I am also trained in DBT, EMDR, and Lifespan Integration.
Sometimes feelings and behaviors become obstacles to accessing your strength. If you don't accept yourself as you are, you can't change--a paradox, but true. Self-acceptance can be difficult, especially with history of abuse, trauma, or opression in which shame/guilt become integral to your sense of self. Destructive behavior, in whatever form, has its own logic, but is understandable given your history. We cope in ways that serve to protect ourselves in childhood--serving a useful purpose back then. But now, they prevent you from having stable, close relationships and feeling an empowered sense of self.

Our therapy style is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Solution Focused Therapy (SFT).
Each person has the ability to learn, grow and make necessary changes in their personal life, relationships, and situations. We aim at exploring and understanding ways of thinking and patterns of behavior one may be completely unaware of, resulting in repetitive patterns of behavior that ultimately lead to dissatisfaction and emotional turmoil in a person's life. We are driven by a belief that each individual has potential to grow from their life experiences, whether it be good or bad. As a group of highly qualified and trained therapists, we are passionate about solving critical challenges and inspiring personal growth.

Beyond the initial reason for engaging in therapy, I often help people and their loved ones explore the underlying patterns in behaviors, relationships and life engagement that hinder growth, satisfaction and peace. Together we create an environment where you can safely address the situations, challenges, and often pain that brought you and your family to counseling while learning skills, tools, techniques and approaches to support you and your family outside of therapy.

In my therapeutic practice I seek to motivate clients to build the brain they want rather than feeling stuck with the one they have. I use Dialectical Behavior Therapy techniques and skills to help clients set and achieve their own therapeutic goals and try to instil a sense of hopefulness and resolve in every session.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
