I’m grounded in psychodynamic, existential-humanistic therapy, and trained in EMDR & DBT to offer trauma-informed care.
My bottom line as a therapist is to provide a safe, respectful, and validating space where you are listened to without judgement, assumptions, or an agenda. My experience taught me to listen beyond words and look beyond appearances and my trainings in music and visual art allow me to do so with greater agility and accuracy, bring us closer to your inner voice and shedding light on your inner world. This foundation of human-to-human understanding will help us work together as partners to reach your goals - whether it is healing, relief, growth, self-exploration, or change - with a deep sense of clarity, peace, and authenticity.

Thank you for being here. My name is Emily and I'm a Master's level clinician. Within the therapeutic process, I primarily utilize person-centered, DBT oriented practices to assist each client in reaching their goals. I believe that you are an expert in your own life, but I also believe that sometimes the stories that we tell ourselves can become muddled. I hope to act as an extra set of eyes and ears to assist you in becoming a reliable narrator of your own story. In this way, you'll gain insight into your sense of self, build resiliency, and maintain positive coping skills to weather life's challenges.

I completed a clinical internship under the supervision of Philadelphia DBT Associates where I became well-versed in the pillars of DBT Skills Training.
I am a Master's level clinician holding a degree in Trauma Therapy, currently completing my post-graduate licensure hours. With sensitivity to trauma in the forefront, my therapeutic practice places emphasis on adverse experiences and their impact on a person’s health and development across the lifespan. I view wellness from a holistic lens, by taking the interconnection of mental and social factors into account rather than just symptom presentation. I believe that overall health and wellness can be achieved and increased through the integration of skills training and mindfulness practice.

In order to best help you, I will pull from over twenty years of experience and training from psychoanalytic, systems, CBT and DBT approaches.
Choosing a therapist is a difficult decision. Instead of telling you how I work, I decided to ask some of my patients to describe it in their words. "Susan is so down to earth that I feel like I'm talking to a good friend." "She really cares about her patients." "She makes it easy to talk about things that are very difficult to say out loud." "She is non-judgemental, kind, intelligent and professional." "After working with Susan my life is now moving in a positive direction." "Most importantly she has helped me to parlay the skills we've worked on into my life."

I believe that everyone is capable of healing from old wounds and changing. I provide a safe space for people to talk about difficult experiences without fear of judgment. I help people work through unresolved issues that are preventing them from creating the lives they want. Together, my clients and I work to change self-defeating thoughts and behavioral patterns. People learn how they want to be cared for and how to have fulfilling relationships. If you are going through a difficult time or dealing with long standing issues, I can help.

With training in DBT and IFS, I am able to support people to connect and befriend themselves and others in a meaningful way.
You find yourself feeling lost in your own body. You feel disconnected and have lost trust in yourself, your body and the world around you. You notice a part of you has gotten in the way of the life that you want to lead. You find yourself struggling to manage the voices of the parts within you and it feels overwhelming. So, it is easier to restrict, binge, purge and obsess over your body to protect yourself and to quiet those voices. You’re exhausted from managing all these differing parts that seem to leave you feeling anxious, depressed and alone. You feel you have lost your authentic Self.

I am a licensed professional counselor that is person-centered and utilizes psychodynamic, existential and CBT/DBT/ACT approaches.
I view the mental health recovery process as similar to climbing a mountain: the first steps may feel overwhelming at times, however, therapy is a partnership where I can provide tools that help my clients get where they would like to go, while also building resiliency and strength for the future. Throughout the process, I will provide encouragement and at times, remind you to look back at how far you have come. Furthermore, I provide a non-judgmental and empathic space for this journey to occur.

Dialectical (DBT) Therapists
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is the treatment most closely associated with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Therapists practice DBT in both individual and group sessions. The therapy combines elements of CBT to help with regulating emotion through distress tolerance and mindfulness. The goal of Dialectical Behavior Therapy is to alleviate the intense emotional pain associated with BPD. Its core assumption is that change and acceptance are intertwined. We typically think of our efforts to change things as emerging out of non-acceptance. We either decide to accept things as they are or we seek to change: through DBT it's not a case of change or acceptance, but resolving the conflicts to allow for self-acceptance and constructive change.

If you're looking for DBT therapy in Philadelphia or for a Philadelphia DBT therapist these professionals provide dialectical behavior therapy, DBT group therapy, DBT therapy, dialectic behavioral therapy (which is a common misspelling) and dialectical therapy. They provide dialectical counseling, DBT counseling in Philadelphia and DBT treatment. They include DBT groups, DBT therapists, DBT psychologists and DBT counseling.
