Are you looking for someone with whom you can have an open, honest, direct, and thoughtful conversation about whatever matters most to you? Someone who will listen carefully and attentively to you? Someone who will engage you in warm, candid, and supportive dialogue in ways that encourage you and help you to grow as a person? Someone who will help you to repair whatever has been ruptured in your life? If so, we would likely work well together! At the most basic level, therapy is an opportunity to make an intentional connection with each other in order to bring about greater awareness and understanding, and, ultimately, healing.

Hello and welcome! My name is Hayl and I'm an LCSW experienced in supporting people from all walks of life in their trauma recovery. Trauma is not merely the external event that happened to you, but rather what happens inside of you as a result of the event that happened to you. Trauma occurs when we have adverse experiences that we are forced to face alone, such as having no secure attachment figure or safe space to process and integrate these experiences. Trauma is a deep psychological wound that deserves attention and care just as any wound does. Together we will embark on a journey to feel safe, secure, and understood.

I provide Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an effective and evidence-based form of therapy for people who feel overwhelming emotions and who end up feeling worse in their attempts to feel better.
Your intense emotions lead you to lash out at people you care about and you don’t always know why. You crave close relationships, but your feelings of unworthiness lead you to push people away before they even have a chance to explain themselves. You might impulsively send a stream of angry text messages to anyone you feel has slighted you, and while you hoped doing so would feel relieving, you're left feeling even more alone. When you're not in deep emotional pain, the emptiness inside you leads you to numb out until you feel nothing at all, or you'll try anything just to feel something, no matter how the risky the outcome may be.

Our DBT program is relationally focused, empathy-oriented, and designed with excellence in mind.
We tend to think of change and acceptance as opposing truths, as if accepting our situation means doing nothing about it. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a therapeutic approach that seeks to transcend this all-or-nothing way of thinking. It teaches us to radically accept our situation as it is, while still working to improve the things within our control. Instead of seeing change and acceptance as opposing truths, DBT allows us to see them as truths that reinforce each other. In other words: embracing acceptance can lead to change, and embracing change can lead to acceptance.

Although my specialties are DBT, ESFT and trauma, I have found these approaches are well suited for many disorders.
Clients that I work with typically are struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and symptoms of trauma. I work closely with my clients to allow them to feel heard. I utilize a combination of modalities of treatment such as DBT, ESFT and CBT to reach individualized goals.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
