I have extensive experience in trauma treatment (including TFCBT and EMDR) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
Therapy is an invitation to begin where you are, just as you are. My first goal is to listen well and to seek to understand you. While my training includes many therapeutic approaches informed by research, I see therapy most of all as a creative process that unfolds within a genuine relationship. I believe that good therapy is flexible and responsive - it can be gentle and compassionate, serious and tough, and sometimes even very funny.

My personal theoretical foundation is not limited to one approach. I believe it is necessary for counselors to be adaptive. Every client is different and our responses and approaches should be equally diverse. One person may need a cognitive behavioral approach whereas another would be more responsive to brief counseling. This eclectic approach will be applied to all clients. Techniques will vary between clients to best meet the individual client's needs.

Carol Rodgers once said If we are able to accept ourselves just as we are, then we can change. Likewise, I believe that everyone has the unique ability to discover significance within themself. This path to personal development is often found within the context of meaningful relationships. A therapeutic relationship can offer helpful guidance towards radical acceptance, profound healing and transformational growth.

Approaches I use include elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), client centered, strengths based, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and brainspotting.
I am passionate about working with teens, young adults, and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. There are so many changes taking place during these stages of life and it can feel overwhelming and scary at times. I love working with people as they work through these transitions, find themselves, and become more confident and self compassionate.

Hope and joy are parts of life, however, life can also be filled with struggle and hardship. At times our struggle can be so great that it starts to chip away at our sense of hope. It's at this point that counseling can be helpful. It is my goal to walk alongside people as they face these struggles that have made it difficult to maintain hope. They can stem from a host of experiences including; trauma, depression, anxiety, loss/grief, and relationships. I wholeheartedly believe it takes courage to face what is troubling us or causing us pain.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
