Each person processes physical and emotional experiences differently. My approach in treating these experiences as they become overwhelming to ones physical and mental health is with compassion and authenticity. When working in the respiratory therapy field I watched many of my patients struggle with managing their complex emotional responses due to the chronic respiratory illnesses. Anxiety, stress and depression has an impact not only on our mental well being but our physical health as well.

Maybe you or someone you care about seems to have lost control of your ability to drink, take medication, eat, gamble, have sex, use the internet, play video games in a way that is not disruptive or harmful to you or the ones you love. Is someone telling you that your behavior is a problem? Are you unable to consistently predict whether or not you can stop once you start? Do you find yourself planning, thinking about or engaging in the behavior when you need to be attending to other things in your life like relationships, work or school?

I use several different modalities to include CBT, CPT, and DBT.
Our experiences in life can present us with challenges, stress, depression, anxiety and emotional turmoil in the here and now. Everyone can benefit from emotional support to help navigate the difficulties of life, especially when our own coping and problem skills don't seem to manage what we are experiencing. Initiating therapy is the start of building our coping skills in navigating through the course of life and achieving our goals. I believe that the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is critical in a non-judgmental and safe setting. I want to help you achieve your goals and reach your full potential.

I utilize CBT, ACT, logotherapy, and DBT techniques within a psychoanalytic framework with my clients.
All of us are striving to be true to ourselves and our loved ones around us. Feeling authentic and true to who we are can assist us in living life the way we would like to. Sometimes, our mood-related difficulties and our life experiences can get in the way our authenticity. You could be experiencing mood-related difficulties as a reaction to grief, trauma, depression, substance use, chronic illnesses, identity issues, cross-cultural issues, and relational difficulties, which I specialize in working with.

I draw from mindfulness and third-wave behavioral therapies (ACT, DBT).
Do you find yourself trapped in cycles of rumination or anxiety? Do you go out of your way to avoid feeling sadness, grief, discomfort, or shame? Are you struggling to take steps forward? Are you where you wanted to be? As Mary Oliver said, "Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine." For most of us, life requires some amount of pain. Without help, our difficulties can feel unmanageable and all-consuming. My role is to hold compassionate space to sit beside you in discomfort, and when it's time, consider a new way forward.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
