I will help you identify your goals and then integrate therapies such as EMDR (trauma therapy), &CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS & person-centered approaches to help your life improve.
Hi! My name is Val and I am in Oldtown Scottsdale. Are you feeling stuck, anxious, or depressed about "growing up"?Many of my clients are in their early to mid-adulthood, & are overwhelmed by life stressors & relationships. They are tired of feeling anxious, sad, angry, or confused. Anxiety, depression, overeating/drinking are all signs of deeper, underlying issues which I will gently assist you in processing, as well as help you see your strengths (yes, you have plenty of them!) My goal is for you to move thru the pain of your past, and give you skills so you can feel excited about your life ahead!

Have a few spots open for new clients! (as of 4/16/24) / / / My time as a Therapist/Human has given me a chance to grow, learn, and partner with a beautiful mixture of people and personalities. Thru this, I've learned the value of consulting the research AND trusting the lived experience of the person in front of me. My approach to therapy has some "Golden Retriever" energy - friendly, enthusiastic, curious, and ready for some puzzle-solving! (Lol.) Folks tend to find my support most helpful when they feel ready for direct, supportive, sometimes playful feedback to help sort thru and navigate the wild challenges Life brings.

We are living in a very challenging time. Many of us are struggling with everyday issues and concerns of life. We attempt to manage and cope with the reality of a changing world, maintaining healthy relationships with immediate family, loved ones & friends. We are focused on positioning ourselves to meet our basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing. Combing this with the reality of being diagnosed with a Mental Health Disorder, fighting the disease of substance abuse, or attempting to confront our past traumatic childhood and adult trauma, a healthy therapeutic relationship is critical at this time for individual clients.

Do you feel stuck or lost much of the time, but also have an innate ability to recognize that you want and deserve more out of life, out of your relationships, perhaps more out of yourself? Do you want to participate in a deep dive of possible unconscious material that may be holding you back? Being able to open up about these vulnerabilities is challenging and involves deep exploration into the psyche. My intention is to create a safe, accepting container so you are able to explore all parts of yourself, welcome them and integrate them into your life.

I know counseling works because I have been through it. Take it from someone who has served 9 years in the army, as a medic, deployed twice, divorced, and was abusing substances because all of these events hindered my spirit. Is life easy? No but you can make it way easier. That's the trick and that's what I am here for. I may not know all the answers but I am willing to discover it with you. I may have solutions that are different due to my upbringing (being half Korean and white had many learning lessons growing up and life). To find the answers to instill proper actions for a better quality of life is the goal. That's my mission.

I also have experience in couples therapy, academic challenges, anxiety, depression, identity-related concerns, addiction, Spanish-speaking counseling, and DBT, amongst others.
Welcome! Whether you are working through a traumatic event, relationship challenges, or stress, I am happy and honored to help. My hope is to provide a sanctuary where you can find healing, make changes, and become the person you aspire to be. Given that I am from a family that was involved in military and the medical field, I am particularly drawn to working with public safety professionals (first responders- veterans, healthcare workers, police, firefighters, etc.). I am particularly interested in helping those who may be working through posttraumatic stress, relationship issues, general stressors, life transitions, or anxiety.

We may also use Dialectical Behavior Therapy and other interventions for PTSD, OCD, addiction, anxiety, personality disorders, bipolar disorders, grief, self-harm, and dissociation.
What constitutes a traumatic event is a very personal experience. Often it isn’t until you are in therapy that you discover the full implications and impact on the quality of your life. The footprint of trauma can show itself as difficulty at work, unhealthy relationship patterns, anxiety, depression, or a lack of sleep. It can also be the total and complete interruption of your life. What you may think is anxiety or depression could be early trauma or developmental trauma. It can also be complex trauma created after multiple events and experiences. It is never what's wrong with you but what's happened to you!

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
