My work is a dynamic blend of all that has profoundly influenced me: the science of Family Systems and my 30 years study in Buddhist psychology. My marriage of 27 years and my relationship with my two young adult children has offered countless teachings and insights into human nature. My passion is in helping my clients develop conscious partnerships, mindful parenting, heal from trauma and live free of anxiety and depression. My work is psychodynamic: integrating attachment theory, contemplative inquiry, meditative practices and relational awareness for healing and happiness.

Do you find yourself feeling vulnerable and susceptible to intense emotional reactions? Small triggers and/or reminders of the traumatic events may be leading to overwhelming emotional responses, contributing to feeling a loss of control over your ability to cope with daily life occurrences. This loss of control can feel distressing and leave you feeling helpless.

Are you always on the go, working and taking care of everyone? Do you feel overwhelmed and wish you could take more time for yourself? But the guilt you feel when you try to say no to people is too much, so you keep saying yes. You’re constantly busy and feel burned out. Do you feel disconnected from your friends, family, and partner? Like you’re running on empty because you support others but you’re missing the support you need. And now you feel on-edge, irritable, like you can settle yourself. Or you have no motivation, feel drained and checked out. I know how you feel because I’ve been there.

My approach is collaborative as well as directive at times. I very much like to meet people where they are at and we work together to identify their goals, the purpose of coming to therapy, work on solutions and growth to move forward. I have been in the field for over 23 years. I care and respect those I treat. I find this to be a humbling and rewarding career. I always look forward to meeting people and discussing if we are a good fit to work together.

I am a therapist that enjoys incorporating a little humor into my sessions with my clients as I feel it helps ease the potential discomfort that they might feel when coming to therapy. My goal is for the client to enjoy coming to therapy despite the work being difficult. I tell my clients that therapy is about processing past or current situations that they have experienced and it's about helping them grow into the people they want to be. I believe my clients can see how much I enjoy this profession and the fact that I am so privileged being the person they trust to confide in.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
