My name is Stephen W. Baker M.A., Ed.D, LPC and I have been employed with Lifestance Health since May of 2021. Understanding that our feelings are ours alone, we sometimes require an objective ear to speak to when processing emotional concerns. As a licensed professional counselor, I value open talk-therapy and evaluate and discuss client's emotions as they see appropriate in the open counseling environment. As a practitioner, I believe that simply needing a calming environment to vent frustrations and or process feelings can be paramount to finding a personal sense of balance and wellness.

Hello, it's my aim to partner with you as you seek to reach your goals in improving and/or eliminating the current symptoms that led you to look for the services of a mental health professional. Additionally, I have researched the benefits of more holistic treatments including aromatherapy for mental health. This can be easily incorporated in the treatment process if you so desire.

My philosophy is one of pragmatism, based on treating each client as an individual with specific needs and empowering clients through education as well as introspection. My greatest goal is to help others develop into healthy and whole individuals, and to embrace life’s journey. In the therapeutic process, I empower the client to discover their own resolve, while at the same time directing the client into a safe path of self-discovery.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist I have particular experience and training in understanding individuals in the context of their relationships, families, and social identities. Sometimes our distress isn't just about what we're doing or not doing. Oftentimes, it's about how we move through the world in our social identities and how the world perceives and interacts with us so I want you to be able to talk about that in therapy. I work with families and couples; However, It is not uncommon for me to work with individuals. Even when I am working with an individual, I understand that individual in context.

Do you ever feel misunderstood, alone, or overwhelmed by your daily responsibilities? Therapy can be a great way to learn to build coping skills for your anxiety, depression, or any other mental health challenges you may be facing. Therapy can also help you set goals, work on boundary setting, communication skills, and processing past events that have left lasting marks in current relationships. It's important that I provide a safe space for my clients to express their feelings, needs, and wants to an unbiased person (me, the counselor) and that I can offer feedback that challenges them to grow and heal!

When we feel overwhelmed, we get out of alignment emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically. This affects our nervous system and can show up as stress, lack of energy, overthinking, addictive behaviors, anxiety, and depression, etc. Trauma can be anything that overwhelmed us. Unresolved trauma drains our system of energy. As a holistic therapist, we address body, mind, and spirit to discover and heal what holds us back. My hope is to provide a safe space for you to access your internal healing wisdom, so that you can be present for what is difficult or painful, make the changes you want, and find greater energy.

Are you overwhelmed, lonely, or adjusting to changes in your life? Sometimes our journeys require us to pause, seek support, and discover a greater understanding and awareness of ourselves, our families, and our community. We are presented with the challenge to make meaning out of our life situations and discover or create new options.

I believe that each of us is a multi-talented, multi-faceted, creative being of pure light and infinite potential! This being true, I know many of us have forgotten this long ago. I did! In forgetting who we truly are, we find ourselves trapped in limitation, living a life we do not really want but hoping it will one-day payoff. If you know you need help but your schedule is unpredictable or just cannot find the help you need in your area, Freedom360 is the online solution for you!

Life can seem a series of barriers and obstacles that present difficulties in allowing us to be our full and authentic self. How we think and what we believe, whether true or not, often drive our perceptions towards actions. Gaps can exist in our own self-image and what we tell ourselves. Sometimes the gap is based on past experiences and labels others may have placed on us. I believe that bridging these gaps in understanding can be transformative and freeing. However, the steps to seek assistance in exploring how we are affected by these deeply held beliefs can be a tough one.

Often the people who find me first are the families of my actual clients. They are seeking care for a loved one who is either developing symptoms or has been diagnosed with Psychosis. Most often families and friends don't really know what's happening, they just know that something has drastically changed. But finding treatment for Psychosis, outside of calling the 911 or going to an emergency department, is often very challenging. The good news is there is hope! Treatment for Psychosis has come a long way in the past years. The earlier a person starts treatment, then the better the outcomes are!

Counseling is best when it's personalized. There is no such things as a "one-size-fits-all" method to therapy. I have found that many of us have a combination of trauma and maladaptive behaviors that once explored and processed can dramatically improve the quality of life. I implement four cornerstone treatment approaches: EMDR, Mindful Movement, DBT(Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and expressive arts to calm the nervous system, resolve trauma and incorporate new behaviors.

Life is filled with many hardships and disappointments of which we have no control over. However, we do have the ability to choose how we perceive and respond to these unfortunate events. Perspective is key! Accepting the past, adjusting to life's unexpected changes, and learning to forgive yourself and others isn't easy, but it is possible. We are all prone to experiencing feelings of guilt, depression, anxiety, and sometimes, a loss sense of self during trying times, but together we can create a plan that guides you towards a better version of yourself. You are more than capable of reaching your full potential!

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Dallas?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
