I sincerely trust in an individual’s ability to heal, even from profound pain and trauma, and have dedicated my professional life to guiding patients through some of the most challenging times of their lives. My practice focuses on intimacy and reproductive well-being, as well as a wide range of psychological concerns, including: anxiety, recovery following illness or medical trauma, relationship concerns, and grief. I also make it a sincere priority to provide a welcoming space for the LGBTQIA community. My website presents a great deal of information about sexual therapy, simply because it is often omitted from healing, sadly.

I’m the person you want to see when you are ready to be challenged, encouraged, and guided through your life story. I’m someone who understands why we behave the way we do, and that these behaviors are learned and adaptive. There is nothing wrong with you, and I am here to challenge your thoughts against this. I genuinely enjoy working with clients who have found themselves in a place they didn't think they would be. I will walk you through what is happening in your life, not around it. I help my clients learn who they are, navigate their own needs and desires, and learn how to walk through life with compassion for themselves.

I believe that mental health is a vital component in creating a complete and satisfying experience of personhood. It's as important to take care of your inner life and psychological well-being as it is to take care of your physical health. I feel that every individual is unique, and therefore every therapeutic relationship is unique. For counseling to be effective, it is essential that you find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable and understood. The key ingredient for successful results in psychotherapy is a strong relationship between you and your therapist.

In my practice, I work with adults and children ages 4-18 who are experiencing or have experienced trauma (PTSD) or unresolved grief in their lives. Trauma can affect relationships, friendships, marriages and parenting. It can significantly impact how we cope from day to day. Unfortunately, such issues that have been ignored may keep coming up and can haunt us at the most inopportune times. I am continually amazed at how resilient the human mind and spirit can be with just some intentional focus on those areas of life.

We are all just walking each other home. While I bring a deep love for/nerdiness about how we become us, you know you best. You've got the map and say where to go — I empower you to navigate, process, unpack and heal. We will work to make connections, identify patterns/themes and reframe old stories that no longer serve you. I am also trained in EMDR & approach therapy through a trauma-informed, systemic, anti-oppression lens, practicing cultural humility. I am a visionary curator of transformative experiences. If you have tried therapy before and are still struggling and/or are ready to change your trajectory, call me.

As James Baldwin said, "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." I cannot promise that everything will be better every time, every day, but I do believe that we are more than the problems we face and the labels assigned to us. I work with clients to reclaim ownership of their lives and become empowered to work toward the changes they seek. Sometimes, as we change, our ideas and our goals may shift, and our understanding of possible or impossible may be altered. I am here to help my clients explore themselves, their problems, their goals, and the challenges they face along the way.

Being a parent is a joy like none other. This may however become challenging if your child (especially a teenager) battles emotional, behavioral, eating disorders, lack of confidence or addiction problems. Teenagers with these issues often argue, have hard time expressing emotions, have disruptive behavior, sudden change in eating habits and conscious of their body image. They might resort to use of alcohol or other drugs to escape struggles. This does not mean you are a bad parent; it is just a difficult time for your family. You just need someone to walk you through during this difficult time.

Maybe you’ve tried everything. You’ve spent the last of your energy and hope. It feels like depression and anxiety are winning. Or drugs or alcohol are taking over. It’s a scary place to be. And can feel lonely. But you don’t have to be alone. I work with clients in this scary place and am unafraid to step into these challenges with you. You already have the strength and courage to do this. I can help you find your own way to make different choices for yourself and make your situation better.

We are not meant to live life alone, but rather deeply involved in relationships. Some of these relationships are highly successful, while others have come with great loss, significant struggle or just the every day difficulty of learning to live and enjoy life with another person. I believe in the value of working through personal problems in the context of building stronger relationships. I will help you work through this on a personal level or with whomever you are needing to have a restored relationship with.

I've provided therapy services for adults, teens, and children for over 8 years. I've found that the individuals who seem to flourish working with me are those who are particularly committed to understanding themselves and their struggles at a deeper level. I work to help facilitate meaningful insights and this often includes exploration of earlier relationships in a client's life. I believe that each person I work with is a unique and complex individual needing services tailored to them.

My therapeutic style is ideal for clients looking to reconnect with themselves on all levels. Clients should come curious about identifying emotional and psychological blocks, as well as where trauma, tension, anxiety, or depression is stored in the physical body. I specialize in treating people who are struggling with anxiety, depression, illness, death, sexual assault survivors, and bi-polar. I frequently work with women who are trying to stabilize their body and mind after childbirth, trauma, or menapause. All are welcome.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Kansas City?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
