My clinical experience includes addressing anxiety, depression, life transitions, family-of-origin issues, and eating disorders.
Loving presence is at the heart of my practice. I trust the inner wisdom of each individual and view the therapist-client relationship as a collaboration. We all experience challenging seasons of life. In difficult times, we may realize that our habitual behaviors and patterns of relating to others are out of alignment with our core values. In our work together, I will gently encourage self-inquiry in service of realigning with your wise, authentic self. I believe that the body holds a deep wisdom that each one of us can ultimately learn to trust.

Areas of special focus include couples' therapy, family communication, depression, anxiety, identity, cultural adjustment, chronic illness, and new parenting.
I am interested in the meanings that you make from your life experiences and the influence that these have on your perspectives of yourself, your relationships, and your future. I find that viewing problems as separate from personhood helps to lessen feelings of guilt and shame so that we can work together in a collaborative environment. My training in family systems theory informs my view of people in the context of their relationships, environment, and culture. I consider it a privilege to work with people to bring about the changes they desire in their lives and relationships.

We are living through a difficult time. Being able to live in this space of not knowing what the future holds can be disorienting. I provide support for anyone experiencing any form of distress, depression, or anxiety. I often work with clients on questions of purpose and direction. Overarching my approach is an interest in the creation of meaning. How do we make sense of a shifting world? How do we navigate life’s challenges and build our reserves of flexibility and adaptability? I have additional expertise in working with clients with medical issues, and Autism spectrum disorders.

* Accepting New Clients* I became a therapist because I believe in human potential and have personally experienced some of the ways life can hamper the peace, joy, and healthy relationships we all deserve to have. Sometimes, things happen to us that are unhelpful, unfair, or traumatic and certainly not our choice, and other times, we’ve learned to cope with life in ways that worked for a time and just aren’t working anymore.

For 25 years I worked with over 16,000 suicidal patients on the mental health unit of St. Francis Hospital with my office partner, Dr. Sunida Bintasan, Adolescent/Child Psychiatrist (who also works with adults). From observing their common patterns, I created an educational program (for persons with issues of deep despair, hopelessness, depression, recurrent suicidal thinking) called Contextual-Conceptual Therapy (CCT). Combining expressive arts techniques, education, and therapy using "maps, models, & metaphors", it helps clients discover the roots of their suicidal thinking/ deep despair to develop healthier relationships.

I work with adults and couples and have experience working with a wide range of issues. We’ll talk about what’s important for you and what goals you have for therapy, and this will guide our work together. I am interested in learning more about how individuals become able to access parts of themselves that can be open to growth and change. When I work with couples I try to understand what is preventing growth in their relationship and to facilitate an atmosphere for new growth and new ways of being with each other.

Sometimes clients who reach out to me are struggling with identifiable issues - depression, anxiety, addictions, stress, grief, life transitions, or illness. Sometimes they're couples grappling with the fallout of infidelity or suffering from a loss of intimacy. And sometimes new clients don't even know what the problem is. They just know something isn't working. I've been practicing for over thirty years, helping individuals and couples gain a deeper understanding of themselves and each other so they can live whole-heartedly and in the present.

I may lead you in meditation or guided visualization to help you bring soothing to anxious states and vitality to depressed states.
"What is within you that longs to come forth, what waits for you to say Yes?" In my work with clients we work together as a team to create a mutual, shared space of compassion, caring and healing. In this space, problems are explored together, losses and hurts are held together. Where there is trauma, it is transformed through bodily-centered somatic therapy and EMDR. I bring a wide array of therapeutic techniques, from ancient wisdom traditions to cutting edge neurobiology, to support your healing and provide practical skills for reaching your goals. Whatever difficulties you face - healing is the rule, not the exception.

Depression Therapists
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy by depression therapists in Bainbridge Island. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
