I offer counseling to adolescents, teens, adults, and couples, working through trauma, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and LGBTQIA+ considerations.
During the course of therapy, my focus is to learn about who you are and where you want to go in your life’s journey. My primary goal in that process is to create a supportive and a non-judgemental environment that can provide us the space to put successes into action and aid us in embodying them. Your goals can seem daunting at first, but together we will build a foundation that empowers you to not only achieve your goals, but also to strive for whatever comes next.

As we mature through life some of us face more challenges than others. It is not the challenges we face that defines us but the steps we take to deal with the challenges that define us. Do you sometime wake up and you just can’t muster the energy to get out of bed today even with a million things that needs to get done? Do you sometimes wake up and before your day can even start you start to feel like your heart is about to fall out of your chest, racing too fast? With so much going on in life, it is hard sometimes not to feel anxious or depressed. You matter and I am here to listen!

I am equally passionate about working with those who have experienced grief, loss, trauma, depression, and anxiety.
You’ve tried to mask your feelings and hold everything together. You have probably told yourself, “I’ve got this under control”, but your actions say differently. Your version of control has been drinking excessively to relax and calm your nerves. You withdraw from your family so you can decompress, but so far nothing seems to help. You cannot escape the feeling. You can’t outrun the problem. As a first responder, you are trained on how to survive, be resilient, strong, to solve others problems, and not show weakness, but what about your problems? When do you get to admit that you need help?

You just took a very huge step, and I thank you. Sometimes just making it through the day can be a challenge. Especially now, with so much going on in the world. It can be a lot to handle at times, but know that you don’t have to sort through those feelings or overcome that fear alone. Know that it is possible to move beyond that stress and anxiety, those depressed feelings, burnout, phobia, relationship issues, and those feelings of being lost. You CAN do it.

I specialize in treating shame and self-sabotaging behavior, depression, and anxiety.
If you’re reading this, you might be considering change and I can also appreciate how you might still be on the fence about therapy. Uncertainty and change can be anxiety provoking. Maybe you’ve been hurt in previous relationships or have had a negative experience with therapy. Society teaches us to not talk about our feelings. Some of us are taught to sort through problems logically to find a reasonable solution or to push all struggles aside like they aren’t real. It can be difficult for us to be vulnerable and begin seeking help.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
